Maybe you make something people love.
Maybe friends and family keep telling you, "You should sell that!"
Or maybe you've already started making a little extra money doing something you're good at.

But how do you know when it's time to turn that idea into a business?

Start by asking yourself a few questions:

1️⃣ Is there a real customer? Beyond friends and family, are there people willing to pay for what you're offering?

2️⃣ Do you know your costs? Materials, supplies, equipment, time, marketing, and other expenses all affect whether you can make money.

3️⃣ Can you deliver consistently? Can you provide your product or service reliably as demand grows?

4️⃣ Do the numbers work? Making sales is exciting, but a successful business also needs to generate enough revenue to cover expenses.

You don't need to know every answer today.
But these are the kinds of questions that help turn a good idea into a workable business.

Thinking about taking that next step?

Indigenous Peoples' Day is about more than remembering where we've been. It's about honoring who we are, the traditions passed down through generations, and the future we're building together.

Here in the Leech Lake community, our Anishinaabe culture, values, and traditions continue to guide and strengthen us.

At Leech Lake Financial Services, we're proud to be part of that journey, helping create opportunities for individuals, families, and future generations to build financial stability and independence.

Today, we honor our ancestors, celebrate the strength of Indigenous peoples, and recognize those carrying our communities forward.

LLFS will be closed Monday, October 12, in observance of Indigenous Peoples' Day. We will reopen Tuesday, October 13.

It's fun to scroll through homes online, imagine where the furniture would go, and picture yourself getting the keys.

But the path to homeownership usually starts long before you begin looking at houses.

It starts with things like:

+ Understanding your credit. Knowing what's on your credit report and where your score stands can help you identify what you may need to work on.

+ Building your savings. Buying a home can come with upfront expenses, moving costs, repairs, and the unexpected costs that come with homeownership.

+ Knowing your budget. What you qualify to borrow and what you feel comfortable paying each month aren't always the same number.

+ Getting your paperwork together. Income, employment, debt, bank statements, and other financial information will all become important during the mortgage process.

+ Learning how the process works. Mortgages, interest rates, closing costs, inspections, insurance—it can feel like a lot when you're hearing it all for the first time.

The good news?

You don't have to figure it all out at once.

If owning a home is one of your future goals, you can start preparing today—even if buying is still a year or two away.

The house hunt may be the exciting part.

But getting financially prepared is where the journey really begins.

Leech Lake Financial Services is here to help you understand the process and prepare for what's ahead.

Today we remember the Battle of Sugar Point.

Leech Lake Financial Services is closed today in observance of the Battle of Sugar Point, a significant moment in the history of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe.

On October 5, 1898, at Sugar Point on the Leech Lake Reservation, members of the Pillager Band of Ojibwe stood their ground against the U.S. Army.

The conflict came after growing frustration over the treatment of tribal members and the exploitation of timber resources on reservation lands. Bugonaygeshig and other community members resisted a system that subjected tribal members to arrests and forced them to travel long distances for court proceedings, while concerns surrounding logging practices and the treatment of the Band's timber resources continued to grow.

The events at Sugar Point became an important part of Leech Lake history—a story of resistance, sovereignty, and people standing up for their rights, resources, and homeland.

Today, we remember those who stood their ground and honor the history that continues to shape our community.

LLFS will resume regular business hours Tuesday, October 6.

Fall is a great time to check in on more than your furnace and winter tires.

Your finances could use a seasonal checkup, too.

Before we head into the last few months of the year, take a few minutes to look at:

✔ Recurring expenses. Are you still paying for subscriptions or memberships you don't use?
✔ Your debt. What balances are you carrying, and is there one you could focus on paying down?
✔ Your savings. Even if you haven't saved as much as you hoped this year, there's still time to make progress.
✔ Upcoming expenses. Heating bills, winter clothing, vehicle maintenance, holidays, travel, and other seasonal costs can sneak up quickly.
✔ Your financial goals. Think back to where you wanted to be at the beginning of the year. Does that goal still make sense? What could you realistically accomplish before December 31?

You don't have to completely overhaul your finances.

Sometimes a good financial checkup simply means knowing where you stand and making one or two adjustments before you move forward.

What's one financial goal you'd like to accomplish before the end of the year?

At the beginning of the month, we asked you to choose ONE financial goal to work toward in September.

So…how did it go?
Did you accomplish your goal?
Make a little progress?
Learn something?

Or maybe life happened and that goal is still waiting for you.

That's okay. A new month gives you another opportunity to keep going.

Before September ends, take five minutes and ask yourself:

✅ What worked this month?
✅ What didn't?
✅ And what's ONE thing I want to do differently in October?

Financial progress isn't about having a perfect month. It's about continuing to move forward.

What’s one financial win you had in September? Share it with us in the comments!
