📣 URGENT TAX UPDATE: IRS Operations During the 2025 Government Shutdown
If you filed a 2024 tax extension, the October 15th deadline is still in effect, even with the current government shutdown. Here’s what you need to know about the IRS's updated operations as of October 8, 2025:
⚠️ What's Still OPEN & Critical for Taxpayers:
The tax law hasn't changed! File and pay as usual to avoid penalties.
📅 Deadline Remains Oct. 15th: File your extended 2024 tax return by the deadline. It will NOT be extended due to the shutdown.
💻 E-Filing is CRITICAL: Most e-filed returns are still being processed as normal. File electronically to ensure the fastest processing.
💸 Tax Refunds Are Still Issued: Refunds are continuing, but choose Direct Deposit to avoid significant delays that will affect paper checks.
💰 Tax Payments: You must still pay any taxes owed by the deadline. Electronic payments are the most reliable option.
🔗 Online Tools Available: Automated services like "Where's My Refund?", transcript access, and the IRS Online Account are still operational.
🚨 Penalties & Interest Accrue: Interest and penalties on unpaid taxes will continue to accrue during the shutdown.
🚫 What is Affected & Closed (Expect Delays):
The IRS has furloughed approximately half its employees, and most non-essential operations are closed.
📞 Live Phone Support: IRS phone lines and helplines are largely unavailable or have extremely limited service.
📦 Paper Returns & Mail: Processing of paper tax returns and all correspondence is SUSPENDED. If you file on paper, your return will not be processed until the shutdown ends.
👤 In-Person Help: Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs) may be closed or operate on a reduced schedule.
🔎 Audits & Enforcement: Most audit and enforcement actions are paused.
📝 Tax-Exempt Applications: Applications for tax-exempt organizations may be significantly delayed.
✅ Action Steps to Take NOW:
E-File your return and pay electronically before the October 15th deadline.
If due a refund, choose Direct Deposit.
If you receive an IRS notice, still follow the instructions carefully, even with expected delays in a response.
