🔭✨ Look up! The universe is putting on a show Saturday night. 🌌
Join us for a free Star Party at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
There will be plenty to see through the telescopes, including:
🌟 Venus: dazzlingly bright shortly after sunset in the western sky
⭐ Spica: the bright star appearing just a few degrees from Venus
🪐 Saturn: the spectacular ringed planet rising later in the evening and visible throughout the night
✨ Globular clusters: ancient collections containing tens to hundreds of thousands of stars
🌌 Andromeda Galaxy: our nearest major galactic neighbor, about 2.5 million light-years away!
“This time of year is great for globular clusters, collections of tens to hundreds of thousands of ancient stars in our galaxy. Also, a couple of nice galaxies including Andromeda, our nearest neighbor, at 2.5 million light years,” said WNC Observatory Director Dr. Thomas Herring.
Venus will be especially spectacular shortly after sunset, while Saturn should provide its best views later in the evening, around 9:30 to 10 p.m., according to Dr. Herring.
Bring your curiosity, your family and friends, and if you have binoculars, bring those, too!
The stars are waiting. Come see what’s up at 2269 Vanpatten Ave. on the northern end of WNC's campus. 🌠

From the WNC campus to the Board of Regents table. Talk about a first day to remember! The Associated Students of Western Nevada (ASWN) officers jumped right into the NSHE Board of Regents quarterly meeting today at Truckee Meadows Community College, and they made the most of every minute.
ASWN President Karla Salas Dominguez and the Haire brothers Jacob, vice president, and Jack, treasurer, spent the day connecting with Regents, including Carol Del Carlo and Heather Brown, learning more about NSHE and getting a firsthand look at the people and places shaping higher education across Nevada.
📸 Jacob and Jack even had a fun WNC connection moment, posing for a photo in front of a picture of WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe from his days as TMCC’s acting president!
And then there was the jacket. 😎🧥 The students discovered a pretty awesome jacket featuring the logos of all the NSHE institutions. Needless to say, it caught their attention.
President Dalpe delivered WNC’s annual metrics presentation a day earlier than anticipated, highlighted by the college's largest graduation class ever last spring.
Way to represent, Wildcats! 👏

🎙️ New semester, new Wildcat Connection. 🐾
The first episode of the semester is “Physics with Tom,” taking us on a fascinating journey with WNC physics and astronomy professor Dr. Thomas Herring, the recipient of the 2026 ASWN Faculty of the Year Award. 🚀🔭
From his mohawk and NASA jacket to flying aboard NASA’s SOFIA aircraft, Dr. Herring has embraced a lifelong passion for space exploration and helping others understand how science really works.
Listen to Joshua Fleming and Ryan Johnson talk with Dr. Herring about astronomy, teaching, NASA, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence and why the pursuit of understanding our universe makes science so special.

🎁 A surprise visit, a little encouragement and some sweet treats.
WNC’s student government received an unexpected and very welcome visitor on campus today.
Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents member Heather Brown stopped by to spend time with the Associated Students of Western Nevada (ASWN), and she didn’t arrive empty-handed. She brought along “Have a Great Semester” care packages filled with goodies to help kick off the new semester on a sweet note. 🍬📚
But the best part? Regent Brown took time to sit down, get to know each student and hear their voices, encouraging them to speak up and make their perspectives count both at WNC and in their communities. 💬✨
Before wrapping up her visit prior to attending the regents’ quarterly meeting Thursday and Friday in Reno, she surprised some hardworking students in the library with the remaining care packages and introduced them to ASWN officers and the important role student government plays on campus.
Thank you, Regent Brown, for making time to connect with our Wildcats and remind our students that their voices matter. ❤️💙
