🚨 Georgia homeowners — quick warning about a growing roofing scam
Some roofers are lifting or creasing shingles to make fake wind/hail damage so you’ll file an insurance claim.
That can get the contractor investigated by groups like the National Insurance Crime Bureau — and yes, roofers can be arrested.
Here’s the part most homeowners don’t know:
➡️ When the damage wasn’t caused by wind/hail,
➡️ your wind/hail claim can be reclassified as a vandalism claim.
Even if you didn’t know it was happening.
That means:
Your claim history is still affected
Your policy can be flagged
And coverage can even be denied
In Georgia, these cases can be reviewed by the Georgia Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner.
🚩 Red flag: any roofer who says “we’ll help get it approved” or wants to be on your roof alone.
✅ Real roofers document damage — they don’t create it.
Before filing a claim, call your insurance agent first.
