Night Life in the Country
Opossums are highly misunderstood and very beneficial in the garden. They are the only North American marsupial; acting as double duty pest control and sanitation by eating mice, rats, snakes, worms, slugs and insects. They eat it all. Sometimes I leave out the stock bones and vegetables for a treat in a secure area away from my main house. While there is some debate about this detail, they are one of the top predators for ticks and can eat up to 5,000 ticks per season. They have the highest natural defense from rattlesnake bites and its thanks to them we have rattlesnake antivenom. They do not carry rabies.
Winter is coming, and these sweet creatures are susceptible to frostbite. They will look for warm places to spend the night. Please give them a night at your inn under your decks and other shelters. They won’t stay long. Be kind.
