Despite bouts of volatility, markets have been supported by solid economic activity and strong earnings growth throughout 2026. As a result, high yield spreads have narrowed to extremely tight levels, now sitting in the 4th percentile versus history. At the same time, the high yield market has seen a recent uptick in the default rate over the last 12months, currently sitting at 2.0%. While this figure is the highest it’s been since January 2024, looking under the hood shows that these defaults are mainly concentrated in the CCC credit bucket.

Semiconductor stocks have faced another bout of volatility, down 20.3% since their peak on June 22, as investors weigh elevated expectations against questions around the sustainability and returns of the AI-related capex. However, sharp swings are nothing new for the sector. Since 1995, the PHLX Semiconductor Index has experienced an average intra-year decline of 29.8%, yet still finished the year higher in 20 of those 31 years. 2026 has been no exception: Despite falling as much as 28.6% from its highs, the index remains up a remarkable 66% year-to-date, even after three consecutive years of double-digit returns, including a peak-to trough decline of 35%.

It is becoming more difficult for investors to find ways to diversify away from AI exposure as it commands a growing share of public and private markets. Hyperscalers, with a seemingly never-ending appetite for fresh capital, have tapped nearly every corner of the capital markets – raising both equity and debt – to fund the AI capex buildout. As a result, market concentration in the tech sector, which is increasingly tied to AI, has risen with no signs of slowing down. According to J.P. Morgan Global Research, the cumulative price tag for the buildout is expected to reach $5.5tn by 2030, suggesting that elevated concentration in tech could persist for years. This could leave portfolios acutely exposed to heightened bouts of volatility if challenges arise. Potential challenges include slower AI adoption, delays in upgrading the electrical grid to power data centers or AI companies missing earnings forecasts.

While the Federal Reserve held rates steady at the July meeting, the 9–3 vote made it clear that the committee isn’t fully aligned and hasn’t closed the door on tightening later this year. Committee members Hammack, Kashkari and Logan dissented in favor of a 25 bp hike. Notably, these were the same three who pushed to remove the easing-bias language in April. While the July jobs report reduced the odds of a September hike, the pattern remains clear: There’s a consistent hawkish bloc pressing for a tighter stance. Our base case is the Fed staying on hold, but in the case they do hike rates, short-term yields would likely reprice quickly and that shift could carry through to the broader bond market.

Last weekend, Deb and I had an amazing time seeing Kenny Chesney perform at Sphere in Las Vegas. 🎶🎰

It was my first visit to the Sphere, while Deb has been before, and now I understand why everyone talks about it. If you ever have the chance to go, you should!

We also took a great recommendation from Keith Kline and had dinner at CATCH at the ARIA. It definitely lived up to the hype - Thanks for the recommendation, Keith!

Grateful for a wonderful weekend with Deb experiencing fantastic entertainment, food & service.

Great afternoon with my ProVisors Carmel Valley Torrey View group! 🥾🍻

We started with a hike through Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, followed by a happy hour at Monarch Ocean Pub. It was the perfect combination of great conversations, beautiful scenery, and quality time with an amazing group of professionals.

A special thank you to Michael Elliott for organizing such a fun event. I'm grateful to be part of a community that values building genuine relationships both inside & outside the office.

Looking forward to the next adventure!

Since the market lows in March, momentum stocks have pulled meaningfully ahead of quality stocks. Before that, both factors had largely moved together, benefiting from improving earnings expectations and a resilient economic backdrop. More recently, however, investors have rewarded companies exhibiting the strongest earnings and price trends, allowing momentum stocks to extend their lead.

U.S. companies have an enviable problem: they’re drowning in cash. Since their prior peak in 2021, S&P 500 profit margins have risen 170bps to 15.6%. While the money pot has grown, so too have its uses. CEOs are preparing for the AI era, with capex expected to growth 33% in 2026 on top of 23% in 2025. The hyperscalers alone are projected to spend $700bn this year, hitting 100% of their operating cash flow, and they’re not the only ones. Capex for the rest of the S&P 500 is on track to reach $840bn, up 11% from 2025. While uses vary among non-hyperscalers, companies are investing in modernizing their tech stacks so they can effectively apply AI. M&A activity has also remained remarkably strong. 1Q26 announced volumes were the second highest ever, outdone only by the quarter before.

Since bottoming on March 30, U.S. equities have rallied 19% and continue to push to new all-time highs, fueled in large part by sustained enthusiasm around artificial intelligence. The first quarter earnings season highlighted extraordinary growth across the AI supply chain. As a result, AI-linked returns are no longer being driven solely by a small group of hyperscalers. This year, the opportunity set has broadened from the companies funding AI capex to the companies enabling it.

Bonds have had a rough start to 2026. 10-year Treasury yields are ~40 bps higher year-to-date, with moves through April driven by higher inflation expectations. The leg up in May, however, has been driven by rising real yields.
