Tropical Storm Erin is strengthening and is expected to become a hurricane later today.

Erin is drifting west-northwest and dodging a direct impact with the islands in the Caribbean; however, it’s just close enough where the outer rain bands will bring 2-4 inches of rain (6”+ in isolated spots) there this weekend.

By next week, this storm is now forecast to reach cat 4 strength as it makes a turn to the north, staying away from the U.S. East Coast. High surf and rip currents along parts of the East Coast will be something beach goers will need to watch through much of next week.

As for Invest 98-L in the western Gulf, it’s trying to develop but satellite wind data show that it still lacks a well-defined low-level circulation. There’s a 50% chance this system could briefly strengthen into a tropical depression before moving inland across northeastern Mexico or southern Texas later today. Regardless of development, it will be a heavy rain maker for the area.
