There is a new mandatory reporting requirement for 2024 that all owners of business entities must comply with. It is called the Beneficial Owner Information Report and it must be filed with the US Treasury. Entities in existence as of 1/1/24 must file the report by 12/31/24. Entities created during 2024 must file the report within 90 days of organization.

To file the report, you can go to the US Treasury’s website here:
https://fincen.gov/boi

You will need to create an account and then it asks some basic questions like company name, address, tax number and a list of the owners and their personal information. You will need to upload a photo of a government issued identification as well.

The penalty for failing to do this is $591 per day.

Many companies are required to report information to FinCEN about the individuals who ultimately own or control them. FinCEN began accepting reports on January 1, 2024. Learn more about reporting deadlines.
