This week in 1862, during a raucous Independence Day celebration, downtown Winona catches fire. One store owner keeps members of the fire department near his store by supplying them with whiskey, and his business is the only one saved.

I think enough time has passed that we can now see the humor in this. It's also a reminder to be careful with fireworks this week. You may not have enough whiskey to keep our firemen happy!

Congratulations to 2022 MAFMIC scholarship winner Lydia Thompson! Each year, Minnesota Association of Farm Mutual Insurance Companies awards several scholarships to high school seniors planning to continue their education. This year, Lydia was a recipient of a $750 scholarship from MAFMIC. Nemitz Agency is proud to match this scholarship for any Canby High School student winning the MAFMIC scholarship! Most homes (80% according to this article) are under-insured! There are many reasons for this, some of which are beyond your control. What you can control is to use an agent who will complete a replacement cost estimate using accurate information. Also, if you plan on rebuilding after a catastrophe, make sure you purchase expanded replacement cost coverage if it is available to you. Be aware that contractor pricing may change after a widespread catastrophic event.
