As an Agent for C. Jarvis Insurance, we always hate getting that call or message from someone who's horse is in bad shape and is headed to the vets. In this case, the horse had to be put down. I know I'm with the right agency when I get messages like this:

Hi Mary, just wanted to let you know I got the insurance check from C Jarvis today. Much quicker than I anticipated. Thank you again!

Aside from the smooth payment process, I truly appreciated C. Jarvis the night of the colic -- from your assistance to Erin's, I felt the commitment and support from everyone involved to ensure the right decisions were made.

Uugghh.... foot abscesses. We've all had to deal with them, and we all have our "home remedies" we've used for years. This is a very interesting article on the subject. Credit: thehorse.com

Why do some hoof abscesses heal quickly while others linger? Why are some one-off occurrences while others keep coming back? We consulted two horse hoof experts to answer these questions and more.

Interesting article on vetting and XRays. As the technology improves, we see more and more "things" on the xrays that may concern us, that we didn't see before. And as treatments/diagnostics improve, what was once a "run for the hills" xray, is no longer considered bad. What do you all think?

It's a story as old as radiography itself. An auction prospect comes to the sales grounds with a mild to moderate imperfection on its x-rays, potential buyers flee at the sight of a less-than-pristine vet report, the horse hammers for less than hoped-for, and then it goes on to become an elite runne...

We've all had easy keepers. And then there's the "not so easy keeper". This is an interesting article that highlights some of the more common reasons why your horse isn't keeping good weight on his body, as well as some out of the box thinking for helping with that nutritionally.

You might be relieved to have a horse who doesn’t have an obesity problem. Carrying less weight certainly has its advantages: less strain on joints, a faster

Good, in depth article on the positive effects of exercise on young horses. Bone growth, cardiovascular and muscular changes are explored. It was interesting to me to read that 2 yr old race horses had a lower incidence of injury and death vs. those started as 3 yr olds. Of course, everything should be done carefully and strategically, letting the young horse's body adapt to the increased exercise load. Enjoy!

Learn how young horses' bodies adapt to exercise and how to prepare them for successful careers.

Great article by Dr. Tom Lenz. I was blessed to have him as my vet back in the day in Kansas City. Cold weather impacts all of us, furry friends as well. Especially important is knowing that horses will not drink as much water when it's cold, so risk of colic increases.

The good news is that horses are inherently well equipped to handle practically anything that winter can dish out as long as they have a way to get out of the wind.
