CIP HR Update: Federal Court Halts 2024 Overtime Rule Changes – What Employers Need to Know

Breaking News: On Friday, November 15, 2024, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas invalidated the U.S. Department of Labor's (DOL) regulation that aimed to raise the salary threshold for the "white collar" overtime exemption under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The court determined that the DOL exceeded its statutory authority with this rule, leading to its nationwide nullification. This means that steps taken toward compliance with the 2024 regulations are no longer mandatory.

With the court's ruling, the salary threshold reverts to the 2019 level of $684 per week. Employers who had adjusted salaries or reclassified employees to comply with the now-invalidated increases should consult legal counsel before making further changes. It's also important to note that some states have higher salary thresholds than the federal standard, necessitating compliance with state-specific regulations.

The IRS has announced the 2025 contribution limits for Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), commuter benefits, and more. Below are the updated limits:
Health FSA: $3,300 (up from $3,200)
FSA Rollover: $660 (up from $640)
Commuter Benefits (Parking and Transit): $325 per month (up from $315)
Dependent Care FSA: No change – $5,000 for single taxpayers or married couples filing jointly, $2,500 for married filing separately
Qualified Small Employer HRA: $6,350 for individuals, $12,800 for families
HSA Limits (previously announced): $4,300 for individuals, $8,550 for families
