MYTH: “My home is insured for whatever I think it’s worth.”

TRUTH: Your home’s insurance value and its market value are two different things. The insurance value is calculated using a computer program that takes into account the current features, materials, size, labor and material cost, to estimate how much it would cost to rebuild your home from the ground up.

MYTH: “My homeowners insurance covers flooding.”

TRUTH: Standard homeowners policies generally do not cover flood damage. The general rule is that falling water is covered, but not rising water. If a tree punctures your roof during a storm, and it rains inside, that can be covered; but not water that has flooded your property and flowed into the house.
