SCAM ALERT:

The NC Attorney Generals Office is seeing a new scam targeting victims of domestic violence.

Scammers search court filings, then call victims of domestic violence and pretend to be law enforcement or court officials. They use details from the case to sound legitimate.

Then they ask for money, claiming they'll keep the victim safe by getting a court order or electronic monitoring for the abuser.

It’s a scam.

No law enforcement or court official will call you and demand money as part of a domestic violence case. Hang up and call law enforcement or the Family Justice Center of Alamance County

If you get a call from someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer, do the following:

1. Hang up and call for help. Scammers will try to create a sense of urgency and isolate the victim. Hang up and call a crisis hotline or law enforcement to discuss safety planning.

2. Do not provide payment. No legitimate law enforcement agency will call you to demand money to dismiss charges or to pay for a protective order, and they will never threaten you if you do not pay. Any call like that is a scam.

3. Remember that filing protective orders and using victim services are free. If someone trying to get money from you tells you otherwise, it’s a scam.

4. Contact the Consumer Protection Division if you think you have been scammed. Call 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or file a complaint online.
