Vermont diverts between 51% and 57% of all food scraps from the landfill.
You know what the national average is? 5-10%
That difference is mind blowing - and clearly indicates there's something different in the culture here.
My feeling is that the sense of it being a moral obligation is shared across political, demographic, and geographic lines. Some cities & towns make it easy to compost by providing curbside pickup, but Vermont is overwhelmingly rural so that option is not available for most of the state.
But that doesn't stop folks from composting - 43% of all households compost right on their property.
It might seem silly to get fired up about composting, but it's just an example of the kinds of values my family and I were seeking when we moved here.
As far as I'm concerned, Vermonters have got this one right.
