Did you know that January 1, 1863, marked a pivotal moment in American banking history? On this New Year's Day, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. While primarily a decree of freedom, this act also had significant, indirect impacts on the nation's financial system by changing the economic landscape and labor force.

Even more directly impacting the structure of banking, the National Bank Act was passed just two months later in February 1863, leading to the creation of nationally chartered banks and a more unified currency. While not signed on January 1st, this era kicked off a massive transformation, moving towards a more robust and regulated financial system that serves us today.

It's a reminder that every new year brings changes and progress, much like the evolution of banking from ledger books to the instant access we enjoy with ATMs!

On June 27, 1967, that the world's very first ATM was unveiled in Enfield, North London.
