From a Sudden Seizure to a Second Chance at Life: Meet Stephanie🎗️

At 35 years old, what began as an ordinary evening quickly became life-changing when Stephanie experienced a grand mal seizure at home. After scans revealed an abnormality on her brain MRI, she was referred to Roswell Park, where her neurosurgeon informed her that the tumor was undoubtedly brain cancer and scheduled a craniotomy just four days later. Following surgery, she returned home to her husband and two young children — a three-year-old son and a one-year-old daughter — determined to fight for more time with her family.

She was diagnosed with diffuse grade 3 anaplastic astrocytoma and immediately began aggressive treatment, including brain radiation and chemotherapy. Today, after completing treatment, she has no evidence of disease. Although brain cancer requires lifelong monitoring, she remains grateful for the second chance she has been given. 🙏🏼

Now working at a chemotherapy infusion clinic herself, her experience allows her to connect with patients on a deeply personal level. This May marks two years since her craniotomy — a milestone she proudly calls her “craniversary” — and nearly one year since completing chemotherapy (all during Brain Cancer Awareness Month). 🩶

She has learned that while cancer at a young age can feel incredibly isolating, the Young Adult Program at Roswell Park has provided connection, support, and comfort through others facing similar diagnoses and experiences.

As Brain Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, Stephanie’s story reminds us that cancer can affect anyone at any time ➖ including young adults balancing everyday life. Share a message of support to Stephanie in the comments as she marks ONE YEAR since completing treatment! 🎊

From a Stage 4 Diagnosis to Finding Hope: Meet Ashley 🎗️

Just four days after turning 30, Ashley received a breast cancer diagnosis ➖ a moment that marked the beginning of a journey that is now reaching its five-year milestone this month. The following year, her diagnosis became stage 4 metastatic breast cancer; all while raising a 10-month-old and an almost 2-year-old during the uncertainty of the pandemic.

Over the past five years, she has faced countless treatments, navigated care through a move to a new city, and continued fighting with strength and resilience. Now settled in Buffalo, she is grateful to call Roswell Park her home base for care.

Although her cancer has spread to her bones, lymph nodes, and liver, she refuses to let it define her. Instead, her journey has taught her to hold tightly to faith, embrace new experiences, take plenty of pictures, and remind the people she loves just how much they mean to her. 💞

As a newer member of the Young Adult Program, she is looking forward to connecting with others navigating cancer at a similar stage of life and finding strength in a supportive community.

Show Ashley some support in the comments as she continues to live life to the fullest and honors her ‘cancerversary’ month! ⬇️

From Misdiagnosis to No Evidence of Disease: Meet Alicia🎗️

At just 20 years old, Alicia noticed a mole on her knee changing in size, shape, and color — all classic warning signs that the spot needed to be examined further. Although initially misdiagnosed as benign, a second opinion confirmed it was melanoma, beginning Alicia’s long and difficult cancer journey.

After multiple surgeries, including a skin graft and lymph node biopsy, Alicia remained tumor-free for three years. Shortly after graduating college at 23, the melanoma returned aggressively. She underwent a 13-hour isolated limb perfusion surgery, additional emergency procedures, radiation for metastatic melanoma in her brain, and eventually received a stage 4 melanoma diagnosis at just 24 years old.

With limited treatment options available in 2014, Alicia endured intensive immunotherapy before switching to a different immunotherapy, where she finally began to see hope. Her tumors continued shrinking until she reached the words every cancer patient hopes to hear: No Evidence of Disease.

Alicia remained tumor-free for nearly a decade before experiencing another recurrence in 2023. After additional immunotherapy and radiation, she once again has no active melanoma to this day! 🔔

Now, Alicia continues to share her story to raise awareness about the seriousness of melanoma and the importance of early detection and regular skin checks ➖ did you know May is Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month? 🖤 Through the Young Adult Program at Roswell Park, she found support, connection, and comfort knowing she wasn’t alone while navigating cancer at such a young age.

Show Alicia some love in the comments, and help us spread awareness for Skin Cancer & Melanoma this May by sharing her story! ⬇️
