A significant severe weather system is forecast to impact large portions of the eastern United States this weekend and into early next week.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, areas from the Southeast through the Mid-Atlantic are facing the greatest potential for severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, hail, and isolated tornadoes.

Storm systems like this can cause a wide range of property damage — roof failures, fallen trees, water intrusion, and interior damage that may not be immediately visible.

A few simple steps now can make things easier if damage does occur:

• Photograph the exterior and interior of your property for documentation
• Secure outdoor furniture and loose materials
• Clear gutters and drainage areas where possible
• Save receipts for any emergency repairs or mitigation work

If your property does experience damage, take time to document conditions carefully before permanent repairs begin.

At NFA, our team of licensed public adjusters, estimators, and forensic accountants stands ready to assist you to thoroughly evaluate damage, review insurance coverage, and advocate for a fair and accurate settlement. Call us at 800-777-3333 for a free consultation.

For those in the path of this system, stay safe and continue monitoring local forecasts.

With snow and freezing temperatures heading our way, now is the time for simple preventative steps that can help property owners and managers avoid major damage - especially frozen pipes, roof issues, and water losses.

🛠️ BEFORE THE STORM

• Keep thermostats set above 55°F, even in vacant spaces
• Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate
• Let faucets drip slightly during extreme cold
• Disconnect and drain exterior hoses
• Clear gutters and roof drains to prevent ice dams
• Remove excess snow buildup from flat or low-slope roofs
• Ensure sump pumps are functioning and discharge lines are clear

🧊 DURING THE STORM

• Monitor indoor temperatures, especially in basements and mechanical rooms
• Watch for signs of frozen pipes: reduced water flow, unusual noises
• Limit roof access unless necessary - safety first

🚨 IF DAMAGE OCCURS

If you experience frozen pipes, water intrusion, or structural damage:

Shut off the water source immediately (if safe to do so)

Document everything with photos and videos

Prevent further damage (temporary repairs, water mitigation)

Call NFA - We have the expertise to help you understand your coverage and advocate for a fair, accurate claim settlement

Preparation now can save thousands of dollars and weeks of disruption later. Stay safe, stay warm, and don’t hesitate to ask for guidance if you need it.

NFA is honored to assist the owner of a 48-unit apartment building on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo that sustained significant damage from a three-alarm fire on Saturday afternoon.

The owner, a longtime NFA client, contacted Jodie Papa immediately upon learning of the fire. Our team responded the same day and was back on-site Sunday to develop a strategy to protect the building from further damage, confer with insurance company representatives, and secure emergency funding to help mitigate cashflow disruptions.

We recognize and commend the courageous efforts of the Buffalo Fire Department, whose swift actions prevented any serious injuries. We also extend our gratitude to the American Red Cross for providing critical support to tenants during this difficult time.

NFA is proud of our long-standing partnership with the American Red Cross, and we are especially grateful for the leadership of our own Katie Papa, who serves on its board of directors.

We remain committed to guiding the building owner through the recovery process and ensuring the best possible outcome.
