This is a delicate topic to be sure, but something a lot of people don't ever consider is the possibility of an illness or injury preventing them from working.

And we truly hope that NEVER happens.

But the Council for Disability Awareness confirms that the chances of missing work due to illness, injury, or pregnancy (which is covered by short-term disability insurance) are greater than you think.

One in four of today’s 20-year-olds can expect to be out of work for at least a year because of a disabling condition before they hit normal retirement age – and each year about 5% of working Americans experience a short-term disability (six months or less).

This means something you want to consider now is investing in some kind of disability insurance. Having a plan will help you find some footing if you find yourself in difficult circumstances.

Payroll software might be the most important system you implement in your business. And, though prices vary widely, basic out-of-the-box payroll software generally starts in the low three figures.

Here are some best-known vendors and a smattering of features:

Gusto
Offers a complete range of all the needed tools and often tops the list of payroll software roundups. Offers onboarding features and syncs with the latest meeting apps, too. Pricier plans seem to have the real extras.

Intuit QuickBooks Payroll
It’s not surprising that this integrates well with their suite of accounting and other business software. Taxes and benefits are covered of course, among other areas, and they also offer templates for new hires, company policy, HR laws, and conflict resolution.

ADP (Automatic Data Processing Inc.)
Any search for payroll software would have to include this household name in the field. Just about all the tools you’d ever imagine for payroll – the trick here would be to not pay for more than you need.

Did you know the average tax refund this year is around $3,000? Makes that beachside vacation seem like a real possibility (a change of scenery is tempting after the last few years).

But have you considered putting that extra cash toward something that could truly be beneficial... especially when times get tough?

If you don't have one or yours is depleted, consider depositing your whole refund in an emergency fund.

In these days of inflation and economic uncertainty, an emergency fund should be a high priority. A good goal is accumulating enough for six months’ living expenses, at least.

There are a couple of things you should think about putting on your business’s spring cleaning list:

- checking for obsolete inventory
- checking for uncollectable debts

Some goods just don’t get sold and some debts just can’t be collected.

The plus side of looking into these? Tax deductibility.

Feel a little bit like Goldilocks when it comes to choosing the right accounting software for your business?

A few tips:
- Start by narrowing the offerings according to what industry or industries they can serve best. You want one of those industries to be yours.
- Then determine what kind of price tag you're willing (and need) to pay for software. Sure, Quickbooks is relatively cheap, but it may not be the ideal software for your business.
- Ask as many questions as you can to make sure you understand all aspects of what the software you choose offers.

Need help deciding which software is just right? Well, we're right here.
