I remember the first time I realized that there were definite success techniques that could help me get the job I wanted. It was eye opening. I filled out an application in pen for a business teaching job and handed it in. I didn’t get the job. When I asked the superintendent why I didn’t get an interview he said “well I would have thought the application would have been typed if your going to be a business teacher.” That was a shocking experience. In 1993 I had the great privilege of interviewing and writing an article about hockey legend Jean Beliveau. Job seekers can learn a lot from his example. Playing semi pro hockey in Quebec City, he made a name for himself. The Montreal Canadiens wanted to sign him and he was anxious to join them. However, the fans in Quebec bought him a brand new car-his first. To show his appreciation for the fans, he agreed to play one more year in Quebec City and delay playing in the NHL. Imagine this level of commitment and loyalty today? The lesson for job seekers is that if you are loyal, honest, and give your best all the time, you are automatically in the top 5 percent of employees! Do you dread Monday mornings in your current job? One of the biggest challenges in my career came when I found I needed to change jobs. There came a point where I found myself dreading Monday mornings. Actually, it started Sunday Night. Have you ever struggled with this? I found it a daunting task, but using some basic principles I had learned, I was able to make the switch successfully. If you are stuck in a job you find isn't right for you, or you dream of a promotion, there is hope! It can be done. One conclusion I reached in my journey was realizing I wasn't alone; there were many other people who were in or had been in my shoes.
