I spent 25 years of my life inside dealerships before entering the commercial insurance industry.

I understand the day-to-day realities of dealership operations: sales, service, parts, HR, client relationships, demos, deliveries, manufacturer expectations, F&I, banking relationships, floorplan management, DMS's, CRM's, compensation, and the constant balancing act required to run a successful operation. All of which are a part of a good risk management strategy.

Insurance was always frustrating at my dealerships. Premiums increased every year, coverage gaps were common, and the explanations from agents rarely reflected an understanding of how dealerships actually operate, and no, a box of donuts doesn't help address the concerns. 🍩

When I joined Lakeside Insurance, I had the opportunity and support to completely rethink that experience for marine and powersports dealers.

In all of my marine and powersports dealership client meetings these past few weeks, I have been having important conversations around the FTC pricing and advertising compliance rules.

Here is my take. This should not be viewed as just another penalty, regulation, or pain point for dealerships. It is an opportunity for best-practice dealerships and OEMs to do what they do best: provide an exceptional customer experience.

As a lifelong dealership addict as a consumer and an industry veteran, it has always bothered me hearing how much the average person dislikes the buying and ownership experience. The reality is that customers want the same things: transparency, consistency, professionalism, and confidence that they are being treated fairly. Unfortunately, too many buying experiences become clouded by confusing pricing structures, misleading advertising, hidden fees, or inconsistent communication.

The dealerships that embrace these standards instead of fighting them will separate themselves from the competition. They will build stronger reputations, create more loyal customers, and ultimately grow stronger businesses.

The marine and powersports industry has an opportunity right now to lead instead of react. The dealers who understand that will win long term.

I got into the marine industry over 20 years ago because I believed in the joy it brings, but I knew there was a lot of room for improvement in the ownership experience. The customer experience provided at the time was dismal. Everything I did in that career — improving my skills, building teams, refining processes — was in service of that mission. The steps that the Marine Retailers Association of the Americas is making with the "Dealership of the Future" is a testament to the shift that has occurred in that industry.

When I moved into commercial insurance, my “why” didn’t change.
Having sat on the other side of the desk, I knew what it felt like to lack clarity and true advocacy. Business owners deserve better. They deserve transparency, strategy, and someone genuinely in their corner. The days of simply "getting some quotes" should be a thing of the past.

Today, I help my clients navigate risk with confidence — not confusion.
