AFRICA DAY SUMMIT CHAMPIONS AFRICA’S ECONOMIC RISE
The Africa Day Global Virtual Summit, hosted on 25 May, concluded with a strong call for African unity, diaspora investment and inclusive economic growth, positioning Africa as a continent ready to lead through collaboration, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Hosted as part of the build-up to the reSURGEnce Durban Conference 2026 themed “Access. Connect and Thrive”, the summit brought together influential African and diaspora leaders to explore solutions to youth unemployment, manufacturing, food security, innovation and investment.
EThekwini Municipality City Manager, Musa Mbhele, said the summit reaffirmed Durban’s position as Africa’s gateway city for trade, tourism, innovation and global partnerships. “We are encouraged that the reSURGEnce Durban Conference is taking centre stage in these discussions, driving international interest and collaboration to accelerate economic growth.”
President of the Institute of the Black World and Pan Africanist, Dr Ron Daniels, said Africa’s development must be driven by Ubuntu and unity, adding that the continent’s resources should benefit African people.
President of the Marcus Garvey Institute, Dr Julius Garvey, called for Africa to function as one geopolitical entity to achieve long-term success.
Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Dr Abike Dabiri-Erewa, encouraged Africans in the diaspora to invest in the continent, saying Nigeria remained open for business and committed to Pan-African partnerships.
reSURGEnce Global Chair, Reverend Dennis Dillon, highlighted Africa’s youthful population and growing economies as key strengths capable of driving an economic breakthrough. He stressed the need to grow Africa’s GDP and expand investment opportunities across the continent.
Co President of the African Diaspora Alliance in Kenya, Dr Shem Ochuodho, identified food security, healthcare, agro-processing, manufacturing, innovation and artificial intelligence as critical sectors for Africa’s future growth.
Other panel speakers included Pan Africanist Dr. Michael Nkrumah, grandson of Ghana’s United Africa Liberation Movement leader, President Kwame Nkrumah, Don Carter – Managing director of the Carter Family Trust (Investor), and Harlem Silicon Valley Founder and President Clayton Banks.
