Two people own the same annuity. Their withdrawals get taxed completely differently.
The difference is which money bought it.
π‘ An annuity inside an IRA is taxed like the IRA: withdrawals are generally ordinary income, full stop.
π An annuity bought with after-tax savings splits every dollar into two kinds: your original money comes back tax-free, but the growth is taxed as ordinary income, and under the usual rules the taxable growth is treated as coming out FIRST.
That last detail surprises owners constantly. Early withdrawals can be all taxable income until the gains are gone.
Before touching an annuity, know which kind you own and what a withdrawal actually triggers.
