It is that time of year again, and here is your WHEN TO STOP FOR A SCHOOL BUS refresher course.

Orange Police Captain Keith Longlois says, “The short answer is. If there is pavement and road stripes between you and the school bus, you have to stop. If there is some sort of median or barrier between you and the school bus you may proceed. For example. On 16th Street in Orange, the opposing lanes are separated by a left turn lane. The left turn lane is not a barrier or a median. It is pavement. All lanes of traffic on 16th Street must stop for a school bus.”

Longlois adds, “Interestingly, Morrell Blvd. is separated by a raised grass median. Even though it is a smaller roadway, the fact that the raised median exists means that traffic opposed to a stopped school bus is not required to stop. Given the nature of the roadway and the neighborhood I would recommend that people stop anyway. However, there is no legal reason for them too.”
