With the heavy rainfall our area has received, many families are dealing with flooding and water intrusion. If your home has been affected, the next few days will be important in protecting your property and documenting any damage.
Here are some steps to consider:
🔹 Put safety first.
🔹 Document the damage thoroughly. Before moving or removing anything, take plenty of photos and videos of affected areas, water lines, damaged belongings, flooring, walls, and furniture.
🔹 Keep damaged items whenever possible. Do not discard property until it has been documented and you have received guidance regarding your claim.
🔹 Take steps to prevent additional damage. Once it is safe:
• Run air conditioning, fans, and dehumidifiers
• Remove standing water if possible
• Open cabinets and closets to increase airflow
• Begin drying wet materials promptly to help reduce the risk of mold
🔹 Save all receipts. Keep records of expenses related to cleanup, emergency repairs, mitigation efforts, temporary housing, and supplies.
Many people are asking whether they should file an insurance claim. The answer depends on the specific circumstances. Coverage, the amount of damage, deductibles, and other factors should all be considered before making that decision.
