Tax seasons scams are heating up. Don’t take the bait.

Tax season is a prime time for scammers. Fraudsters often pose as financial institutions, tax preparers, or government agencies to create urgency around fake tax issues.

Keep an eye out for these red flags:

Unexpected tax or refund messages asking you to review, correct, or confirm your tax documents.
Requests for one-time verification codes, passwords, or login credentials, or to make payments by gift card, wire, or crypto.
Pressure to act immediately to avoid penalties or to keep it secret.
Threats (explicit or implied) of account freezes, fines, wage garnishments, or arrest if action isn’t taken.

If you encounter any of these:

Pause. Never share any personal or financial information. We'll never ask for your password or contact you unexpectedly for a one-time security code.
Disengage. Hang up and don’t respond, click, or open unfamiliar links or attachments.
Verify independently. Contact the IRS, your tax professional, or Schwab using official contact information—not details provided in the message.
Report it. Contact law enforcement (if needed) and notify Schwab at 800-435-4000 (or one of our international toll-free numbers) if you suspect any suspicious account activity. For Schwab Alliance™ clients, please contact your advisor immediately, or call Schwab Alliance™ at 1-800-515-2157 (or +1-602-355-3405 if calling from outside the U.S.).
