JUST EXPRESSING AN OPINION

In case you didn't know it. In New York State it is the law that a health insurance company must first file their rates with the state authorities and get their rates approved before they use them. I like the current system. Why you might ask? Because the days of health insurance companies just handing out huge increases has been curtailed. Last year many companies asked for double digit increases. But most increases were kept to the single digits.

This is not to say the current premium rate process does not have potential problems either. If companies can't adjust premiums to reflect medical expenses and the decisions regarding premium rates are heavily influenced by political interests it could destabilize the health insurance markets over the long haul. This could result in health insurance companies pulling out of the market. Often times an us versus them mentality exists where the consumer is pitted against the insurance company. Ideally, both party's interests should be aligned.

Having said this I feel more comfortable with a system that is geared toward the consumers needs. Health Insurance is so hard to afford and vital to our lives! When a health insurance company files for an increase it should have the burden of proving and justifying why. As a consumer you should have the right to make public comment and the government should try to protect the consumer. In matters like these you hope that someone with the wisdom of Solomon is in charge of the process and is looking out for everyone's interests.

If this topic is of any interest to you, you might consider checking out a new piece of legislation that is being proposed in New York. S.4540/A.7439 As for me I will not become political and believe people should come to their own opinions. I would suggest looking it over and if your so moved get involved!

Important Information if you have Health Republic Insurance of New York as your health insurance provider.

Health Republic has announced that in 2016 they intend to no longer offer products in the capital, Uttica/ North Country, and Hudson Valley rating regions. This means that individuals who reside in these areas and purchase individual coverage will have to purchase other coverage prior to Jan 1st 2016. Small business that are located in the effected areas will be allowed to keep their coverage until their renewal in 2016. This is all subject to DFS approval.
There are numerous counties in NY State that will be effected. If you have questions about how this will effect you, please feel free to reply to the post. You can also call us at 914-752-4414.

Just something to think about on a beautiful Friday afternoon.

One thing that has become more pronounced of late are the disparities in health insurance. As a generality the more "affordable" the insurance the fewer the providers one will find in the network. Some companies might offer out of network coverage...but have you seen the premiums? It feels more and more like the price we pay for "affordable" coverage is fewer and fewer options when we get sick.
Some companies intentionally keep there networks narrow to control costs. This is not a bad strategy and can work very well. As the consumer though you have to have your eyes open and balance between what you need and what you can afford.

Today I had a very interesting meeting with one of the carriers. As some of you may know, the small group market is being expanded to include businesses with 1-100 employees. Because of this change it is quite possible that small groups might find more health insurance options!
