To be honest, before moving to TN, I had a lot of ideas of how life would be. After living in Franklin for a year, there were a few of the things I was surprised by – some good, some not great, but all worth knowing:
😊 How friendly the people are. Online, CA transplants get a ton of heat, but in my personal experience, the people I’ve met have been nothing short of kind and welcoming.
🎶 There’s music everywhere. Not just the large concerts but literally everywhere. On the street, at the restaurants, at the wineries, in the hotel lobby and the airport. Its amazing.
🌫️ The humidity! I read before we moved that that the heat here is “oppressive”. I lived in Rocklin where it regularly got above 100 – how hot could it really be? Well let me tell you, with the humidity – it is HOT! But that’s what A/C is for! And as a bonus, utilities are far less expensive and there’s no soccer practice in the summer! And for the ladies – surprisingly, this humidity doesn’t seem to affect my hair the same 🤷🏻♀️ so that’s another plus
🐞 The more humid, the bigger the bugs – is that a saying? Because the bugs here are big and they’re LOUD! I always said that (despite where they actually spent the money), for me, I paid my CA taxes to keep the bugs and the humidity away. So, the tradeoff for me with no state taxes meant bigger bugs. And we just hire a really great pest control company.
⛈️ Storm Season. We do get real thunderstorms and tornado watches here! But it kind of reminds me of FL – it’s sunny and hot and then we get a storm in the afternoon sometimes - at least that’s what it’s felt like all month. In the last year, we’ve had 1 tornado warning where we had to hunker down as a family in the closet. It was a little scary but I was thankful that my tweens had no choice but to snuggle me because of the lack of room. Count your blessings where you can! For Davidson and Williamson County - on YouTube and Insta is a MUST FOLLOW for weather updates.
So there it is - things to consider if you're planning a move to TN.
Having lived the move myself recently, happy to chat about any part of the move – not just the money stuff.
