The Texas Department of Insurance recently encouraged insurance companies to recognize improvements that can make homes more resistant to things like wind, hail and wildfire damage.

That doesn’t mean every upgrade automatically comes with a discount, but it does mean it’s worth making sure your policy has the right information.

Take the shed example:

A home insured for $250,000 may have around $25,000 for detached structures. If the shed would cost $35,000 to rebuild, there could be a $10,000 difference before the deductible.

Then there is the property stored inside the shed, which may involve a separate coverage question.
