What to bring to your tax appointment - http://eepurl.com/i9D-Gc

In order to prepare for a tax appointment, gather all of the following information and documents that apply to your tax situation. Don’t wait until the last minute to make a tax appointment or your tax refund may be delayed. The busier the IRS gets processing returns, the longer you’ll have to wait for your refund money. Be responsive and provide answers to your tax preparer’s questions as quickly as possible to keep your tax work moving forward.

With tax season officially started, we would like to provide you with a list of necessary documents you will need to properly prepare for your tax filing appointment. By the time we meet with you in person or through a virtual meeting, your appointment will go as smoothly as possible.

This tax season, taxpayers will see one of the largest refunds to date.

With a surplus of newbie tax preparers, here’s a few things to remember when looking for someone to assist you in filing your taxes:

✅ Rates should NOT be percentage based. The government increased the CTC so more will see larger refunds. If your refund is increased, more than likely it’s because of the new credits. Just because you are getting $15k, doesn’t mean the person preparing them should get a percentage.

✅ Flat Rates - Every individuals’ taxes are different. A single w2 earner with no kids should not pay the same rate as a head of household homeowner with 2 dependents.

✅ If you do not pay for your income tax preparation upfront, please keep in mind that your preparer DOES NOT get paid until your return is processed completely. If the IRS holds your refund or uses them to offset a debt (such as student loans or child support), then a tax preparer can hold your tax documents if they are not paid.

✅ Work with an EXPERIENCED Professional. With all the changes due to COVID-19 and tax law updates, someone who has real experience and skin in the game is your best option. Tax Preparers who are new as of this season, may not be familiar with all the previous laws that were in effect prior to this year, which could result in inaccurate information on prior year filings and amendments.

✅ Taxes are not a seasonal thing that lasts a couple of months. Taxes last all year long. Make sure the preparer you chose will be available all year long to assist with responding to letters you may receive from the IRS after the end of the filing season. It’s serious there are changes almost monthly.

Last but certainly not least, every valid professional tax preparer must have a PTIN (at minimum) to file electronically. If you are working with an office that files tax returns electronically, they MUST have an EFIN. Make sure the bottom of your tax return (where you sign) DOES NOT say SELF PREPARED. If you went to a registered tax professional, their name and PTIN will be filed in the boxes by your signature. There are also rules put in place to make sure that standards are met.

All of our tax preparers at Highland Multi-Services have over 10 years of verifiable experience and a plethora of knowledge accessible to you. You can book your appointment with one of our certified professionals at

IMPORTANT: Refund Delays for Those Claiming EITC and ACTC

If you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), the IRS shows your refund will be released mid-February.

Refunds should be available in your account by the first week of March if you chose direct deposit and there are no other issues with your tax return.

The IRS recommends filing in early January, to ensure your refund is available on or shortly after the mid-February hold date.

The reason for the hold or delay:

The Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act of 2015 (PATH Act), which includes the EITC and ACTC, is designed to help taxpayers receive their refunds, while still protecting against fraud. The law requires refunds and credits for those claiming an EITC or ACTC not be released until after mid-February.

For more information, see the IRS Refund Timing for Earned Income Tax Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit Filers topic.

Under the plan Democrats unveiled Monday, most American parents would receive $3,000 a year for every child ages 6 to 17 and $3,600 a year for every child under age 6.

The idea is to send a monthly payment of $250 to $300 to help offset costs families face all year instead of just giving a one-time annual payment.

If it passes Congress, the expanded Child Tax Credit would cut child poverty in half in the United States, experts say.

Are you or someone you know incarcerated? Not only is the person able to file taxes, but are also eligible to the EIP (stimulus).

The IRS updated the Economic Impact Payment (EIP) Eligibility and General Information FAQs to reflect a federal district court’s decision that the IRS cannot deny a stimulus payment to someone who is incarcerated if they otherwise satisfy the criteria for receiving an EIP.
