💳 FINANCIAL LITERACY SERIES — PART 3: CREDIT CARDS

Use Credit — Don’t Let Credit Use You

Credit cards can be useful financial tools when they are managed wisely.

But when balances grow and interest starts adding up, credit can quickly become expensive debt.

Before you swipe, make sure you understand how your credit card works.

💳 Know your APR
APR is the annual percentage rate charged on balances you carry. The higher the APR, the more expensive that debt can become over time.

📅 Pay on time
Late payments can lead to fees and may negatively affect your credit history.

💰 Don’t rely on the minimum payment
The minimum payment keeps your account current, but paying only the minimum can keep you in debt much longer and increase the total interest you pay.

Whenever possible, aim to pay your statement balance in full by the due date.

📊 Keep your balances under control
A high balance compared with your available credit can affect your credit score and make it harder to manage your monthly finances.

🛍️ Think before you swipe
Ask yourself:

“If I had to pay cash for this today, would I still buy it?”

Credit should not become an extension of your income.

It should be a tool you use intentionally.

🎯 THIS WEEK’S FINANCIAL CHALLENGE:

Take a few minutes and review each credit card you have.

Write down:

• Current balance
• Interest rate/APR
• Minimum payment
• Payment due date

Then choose one action you can take this month to improve how you manage your credit.

Remember:

You should control your credit. Your credit should not control you.

💰 FINANCIAL LITERACY SERIES — PART 2: EMERGENCY FUND

Prepare Before the Emergency

Life is unpredictable.

A car repair.
An unexpected medical bill.
A job change.
A home repair.
A family emergency.

The question is not whether unexpected expenses will happen.

The question is: Will you be financially prepared when they do?

An emergency fund is money you intentionally set aside for unexpected and necessary expenses.

🏦 Start with what you can
You do not have to save thousands of dollars overnight. Start with an amount that fits your budget—even if it is $10, $25, or $50 at a time.

🎯 Set a savings goal
Choose your first milestone and work toward it consistently. Once you reach it, keep building.

💵 Pay yourself first
When possible, make saving part of your budget instead of waiting to see what is left at the end of the month.

🔄 Automate your savings
Consider setting up an automatic transfer every payday. Small amounts saved consistently can add up over time.

🚨 Know what an emergency really is
Emergency savings are for unexpected, necessary expenses—not shopping, vacations, entertainment, or impulse purchases.

As your finances improve, work toward building enough savings to help cover several months of essential expenses based on your individual circumstances.

Remember:

An emergency fund cannot prevent an emergency, but it can help prevent an unexpected expense from becoming a financial crisis.

🎯 THIS WEEK’S FINANCIAL CHALLENGE:

Choose an amount you can realistically save from every paycheck.

Then create a separate place for your emergency savings and make your first contribution.

Don’t focus on how small the beginning is.

Start. Stay consistent. Keep building.

💰 FINANCIAL LITERACY SERIES — PART 1: BUDGETING

Tell Your Money Where to Go

Have you ever looked at your bank account and asked:

“Where did all my money go?”

Budgeting is one of the first steps toward taking control of your finances.

A budget is not about restricting yourself or feeling guilty about spending. A budget is simply a plan for your money.

Start by knowing three things:

💵 Your income
How much money is actually coming into your household each month?

🧾 Your expenses
Write down your housing, utilities, groceries, transportation, insurance, debt payments, entertainment, subscriptions, and other spending.

📊 Your spending habits
Track where your money is actually going—not just where you think it is going.

Once you know your numbers, you can begin deciding intentionally where your money should go.

Ask yourself:

What are my needs?
What are my wants?
What am I saving for?
Where can I make adjustments?

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is awareness, consistency, and better financial decisions.

🎯 THIS WEEK’S FINANCIAL CHALLENGE:

Review your last 30 days of spending.

Choose one expense you can reduce and redirect that money toward savings, debt repayment, or another financial goal.

Remember:

You work hard for your money. Make sure your money is working toward the life you want to build.

GOD OPENS DOORS THAT NO ONE ELSE CAN OPEN.

📖 Revelation 3:7–8

I have always dreamed and prayed that God would use my life to help others and be a voice for those who may not have one, but I never imagined He would give me the opportunity to reach such a large audience.

I wasn’t pursuing USA TODAY. I wasn’t knocking on that door.

God opened that door.

What started as a simple desire to share the story of Cabo Verde became an international platform to speak about faith, hope, resilience, and perseverance.

The same God that opened that door for me can open doors for you!

A closed door does not mean God has forgotten you.
A delay does not mean God has denied you.

Keep praying. Keep trusting. Keep walking in obedience.

Because when God opens the door He has prepared for you, no one can shut it.

To God be all the glory!
