⚠️Spot the Scam - Tech Support Scams

A tech support scam can occur in a variety of ways, you may get a phone call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft, click on a pop-up on your computer, or get an email telling you there is a problem with your computer. In each of these instances, the scammer will tell you they can help you, but instead, they are gaining access to your personal information and computer files.

They will sound official, using technical terms to gain your confidence, but instead of helping you, they will install malware on your computer, sell you bogus services for your computer, or gain remote access to your computer to access everything on your computer.

If someone contacts you stating there is a problem on your computer, ignore them. Instead, contact a local computer security professional that you trust, and have them take a look at your computer. Never call the number on a pop-up message or link on your computer screen.

The Federal Trade Commission has issued a warning about scammers pretending to be from the FTC, the con is so convincing, people are emptying their bank accounts thinking they are protecting their money.

Here’s how it works:

You get a phone call or text message that appears to be coming from the Federal Trade Commission’s actual phone number in Washington, D.C.

They tell you there’s a problem with one of your accounts, and they offer to help you protect your funds.

The scam is very convincing because they’re spoofing, or faking, the real FTC phone number and may use the name of a real FTC employee to gain your trust.

TIPS TO PROTECT YOURSELF:

▪️Never transfer or send money, cryptocurrency, or gold to someone you don’t know in response to an unexpected call or message.
▪️Don’t believe anyone who says you have to quickly move your money to “protect” it. Anyone who tells you that is a scammer.
▪️If there’s a problem with your account or identity, always talk about it with someone you trust — especially if the stranger on the phone says it’s serious or involves a crime or claims to be from the government.
▪️Don’t click on links or call phone numbers in unexpected messages. If you think the message could be real, verify the story. Contact the organization in question using a phone number, website, or email address you know is real. Don't use the contact information in the unexpected message.
