May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the Charlotte County community is coming together to raise awareness about behavioral health issues. The Mental Health Awareness Walk, presented by Charlotte Behavioral Health Care, is an excellent opportunity to participate in the national movement. Don't miss this year's walk, taking place on Saturday, May 20, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Laishley Park in Punta Gorda.

Attendees will embark on a scenic 1/4-mile walk around the beautiful Harbor Walk. The event is free to attend, and no registration is necessary. However, guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

Attention local dog owners! The Hounds on Henry Dog Park is getting a makeover! Work started at the end of April and is continuing through May 25. During this update, the dog park on West Henry Street in Punta Gorda will be closed as it undergoes a fencing and sod installation project. The park crews will level off all bare dirt areas in both the large and small dog parks and place new sod for the dogs' safety while the sod establishes.

It's important to note that no dog should be allowed to run freely outside the park during the closure. Due to the presence of heavy equipment, the area adjacent to the park and parking lot is also closed for safety reasons.

Skillets, a popular breakfast and lunch restaurant based in Naples, is set to open its newest location in Port Charlotte's Peachland Promenade plaza this summer. The 4,200-square-foot restaurant is expected to open in July and will have indoor and outdoor seating for up to 180 patrons. Skillets prides itself on using premium, locally-sourced ingredients and making everything from scratch, including homemade syrup, corned beef hash, and fresh-squeezed orange juice.

Skillets' founders, Ross and Noreen Edlund, are excited about the restaurant's new location in Port Charlotte, which they say has grown significantly in recent years.

The Air Power History Tour will fly into Punta Gorda Airport from March 1 through 5 and allows attendees to get an up-close look at historic aircraft while also gaining an appreciation for what the "Greatest Generation" went through during World War II. The show features the legendary B-24 Bomber "Diamond Lil," a T-6 Texan, a T-34 Mentor, a PT-13 Stearman, and an RC-45J Expeditor.

Events part of the Air Power History Tour will occur between 9:00 am to 5:00 pm throughout the show's entire run at PGD Air Center, located at 27450 Challenger Blvd. in Punta Gorda.

Coming up on Sunday, March 5, 2023, is the 15th Annual 'Taste of Punta Gorda and Beyond,' which is hosted by the Punta Gorda Rotary Club and billed as the season's major culinary event. Laishley Park in Punta Gorda will be the site of the upcoming event and feature leading restaurants from Punta Gorda and nearby communities serving "tastes" of signature dishes. But that's not all! Thanks to a recent partnership, pickleball players in Punta Gorda will soon have more courts for playing the popular racket/paddle sport.PicklePlex of Punta Gorda and United Healthcare announced a three-year $245,000 agreement that will make United Healthcare the exclusive insurance provider at the facility, as well as help add eight more pickleball courts.The new courts will help shorten wait times during tournaments at PicklePlex of Punta Gorda.The game of pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong but is played on a smaller court with a lower net and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels.
