Tip #9 – Find and choose the real estate agent that is right for you: I imagine some are reading this and thinking, “What” Don’t get the realtor until now?” You can get the realtor before this point in the process, but if you do, they are going to have you work through all of the things we have covered up to this point. And trust me, the realtor will be thrilled that you come to see them with a preapproval letter in hand. That makes their job much more enjoyable. Without the letter, they always have in the back of their mind questions about can you really afford to purchase what they are showing you. Many realtors will not show you more than just a couple of homes without you going ahead with the preapproval.
Good real estate agents understand the current housing market. They know neighborhoods, housing inventory, how to compare homes, how to present your best offer to a seller and negotiate in your best interest. They also have access to many homes before they hit the market. It’s not uncommon for a home to have an offer before it is “official” with a sign out front. Ask friends, family, and coworkers you trust for recommendations and talk with a few agents. Go to open houses – you may meet an agent you like. You’ll be spending a lot of time with your agent, so choose someone you’ll enjoy working with!
