A homestead exemption reduces the taxable value of your primary residence, and in most states it takes a one-time application to claim.

At age 65 many states add a senior exemption or an assessment freeze that locks your home's taxable value, though these are usually capped by an income limit the state sets.

Veterans can claim a partial exemption, rising to a full exemption for 100% service-connected disabled veterans in many states, and a surviving spouse can sometimes keep it.

Permanently and totally disabled homeowners often qualify for an exemption or freeze, usually with proof such as an SSDI award and an income test.

The detail most people miss is that these can stack, so a homestead exemption may combine with a senior, veteran, or disability break in the same year.

The amounts and rules are set by your state and county, so the only way to know your own numbers is to ask your county assessor.

Most require a filing, often by an early-spring deadline, which is why many eligible homeowners quietly overpay.
