Most people don't know a death certificate can sit marked 'pending' for weeks after someone dies.

When a medical examiner is involved and toxicology testing is needed, those lab results commonly take six to eight weeks to come back, sometimes longer if multiple substances or an unusual case is involved. Until then, the death certificate lists the cause and manner of death as pending, even though it is still a valid legal document families can use in the meantime.

The good news most families do not expect is that burial or cremation almost never has to wait for those results. A funeral home can typically move forward with the service once the medical examiner formally releases the body, well before toxicology comes back. It is really the paperwork trail afterward, like some insurance claims or legal matters, that can end up waiting on the final version of that certificate.

Knowing the difference between the body being released and the certificate being finalized can save a family real confusion during an already hard stretch. 🕊️

Here's a clock most families never know is running: a hospital morgue isn't built to hold a body for long, often no more than a couple of days.

Hospital morgues are designed for short term storage only, generally somewhere between 24 and 72 hours, and most routine deaths are transferred to a funeral home well within that window once the paperwork is complete and a family has chosen where to send their loved one. Cases requiring an autopsy or a medical examiner's review can extend that timeline to two or three days while testing is completed. States set their own specific limits on top of that general range. Louisiana, for example, requires refrigeration once a body has been in a hospital's custody longer than thirty hours.

That clock is already running before most families have even had time to process what's happening, which is part of why funeral homes move as quickly as they do once they get the call. It isn't rushing for its own sake, it's working within a window that was set long before the family was ready. ⏱️

Most people don't know that military funeral honors are already paid for, in full, for almost every veteran. Under a federal law passed in 2000, any veteran discharged under conditions other than dishonorable is entitled to a funeral honors detail at no cost to the family.

At minimum, that means at least two uniformed service members, the folding of the American flag, and the playing of Taps. Many services add more, like a rifle volley fired by an honor detail, or a color guard, depending on what's available and what the family requests through the funeral home or by calling the Department of Defense directly.

It's a benefit separate from the VA's burial and plot allowances, which are a different, smaller payment toward the disposition itself. Two different systems, both earned the same way. 🎖️

Most people don't know eligible veterans can be buried in a national cemetery completely free.

Burial in a VA national cemetery costs the family nothing and includes the gravesite itself, a government-provided grave liner, opening and closing of the grave, and a headstone or marker, along with ongoing perpetual care since these sites are maintained as national shrines. Veterans also receive a burial flag and military funeral honors as part of the benefit.

Eligibility extends beyond the veteran alone. Spouses, dependent children, and in some cases unmarried adult children may also qualify for burial in the same national cemetery, and some families may be eligible for additional burial allowances on top of everything included at no cost. Not every one of the 131 national cemeteries accepts new full body burials though, some are limited to cremated remains only as space runs out.

It's a benefit a lot of veterans and their families have already earned without realizing how much it actually covers. 🇺🇸 Did you know this benefit existed, or is this the first time you're hearing about it?

Most people don't know the FTC actually calls funeral homes undercover just to see whether they'll follow the law.

Throughout 2023, FTC staff placed calls to more than 250 funeral providers across the country without identifying themselves, simply asking basic questions about pricing, the kind any caller is legally entitled to have answered under the Funeral Rule. In January 2024, the agency sent warning letters to 39 funeral homes after finding violations, with the most common problem being a flat refusal to answer price questions over the phone at all.

Those letters reminded providers that noncompliance can carry real financial penalties, and pointed them toward retraining rather than an immediate lawsuit, at least for a first offense caught this way. It's a reminder that the right to get pricing information over the phone isn't just a nice courtesy, it's something regulators actively test for.

Most people don't know there's exactly one funeral charge you're never legally allowed to refuse.

It's called the Basic Services Fee, and under the FTC's Funeral Rule, it's the only non-declinable charge a funeral home is allowed to add to your bill. It covers things like the arrangements conference, planning the service, securing permits, preparing notices, and coordinating with the cemetery or crematory on the family's behalf. Every other line item, the casket, the viewing room, transportation, is supposed to be something you can choose individually.

The rule also blocks funeral homes from stacking on a second mandatory charge disguised as something else, like a separate facility fee or handling fee, on top of the Basic Services Fee. A funeral home that charges this fee and discloses it clearly is simply following the law, the problem only shows up when a second hidden mandatory fee gets added or the disclosure gets skipped entirely.
