The dividend investing scene has changed much in the past 50 years. Part of the mission of Dividend Informer is to educate investors about the dividend investing framework we use to identify opportunities, and how that approach reflects the evolution of the markets as well as how companies utilize capital in the 2020s.

In this article, our team has identified key factors that influence company decision-making regarding dividend policies and how those policies have shifted over the years. It is our hope that you won’t get stuck in yield-chasing mode, ending up with a portfolio of low-quality, low-return stocks, but instead will focus on those proven elements that can drive total return over time—just like the stocks in Dividend Informer.

Coping with (or avoiding altogether) companies that have sub-optimal dividend policies.

Our Dividend Informer Picks Are Thriving in Q1 2026! When the market gets choppy, a lowered-volatility approach can deliver benefits, as editor Doug Gerlach explains.

Hello, informed dividend investors!

In the first quarter of 2026, the stock market experienced significant turmoil, but the Dividend Informer delivered outsized results for its subscribers. While broader market struggled, our carefully selected coverage list of dividend-paying equities proved the immense value of a disciplined investing approach.

Between January 1 and March 31, 2026, the S&P 500 index suffered a steep decline, posting a compound annual return1 of -18.22%. Even traditional safe havens like the S&P Dividend Aristocrats managed only a 6.45% return. In stark contrast, the Dividend Informer achieved a remarkable 14.72% compound annual rate of return over the exact same period. Read more:

After a volatile month, our Dividend Informer covered stocks declined on average 5.9% since our last update on February 26, 2026. Interestingly, this slide is in line with our expectations for dividend paying stocks that should have reduced volatility compared to the broader market, as the S&P 500 declined 7.8% in the same period. This means our companies fell 24% less than the index.

The average beta of our current coverage list is around 0.80. Pleasingly, this is very close to the actual price move of the average Dividend Informer stock of the last month that averaged 0.76 of the broader market’s move.

In this month’s update, the broader market’s pullback provides several attractive buying opportunities in our total coverage universe of 53 companies, including:

* 30 stocks with projected total return greater than 15% a year.

* 36 stocks that are selling at relative value less than 100% and thus rated as potential buys.

* 25 stocks that are paying dividends at an indicated yield greater than 3.0%.
