𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗸?
When I was younger I really liked playing around on the computer and decided to go into computer science and mathematics for a degree when I went to college. I attended Southwest Baptist University and the summer before my senior year I took an internship with Duck Creek. I enjoyed my internship and the team I worked for. I started full-time with Duck Creek after graduation.

The advice I would give to others is to listen to what others have to say or teach you. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions because there is always someone willing to help answer or lead you through your problem. Last but not least do not be afraid of a challenger that pushes you outside of your comfort zone.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗸?
I've always loved math and figuring things out. I am better at analytical thinking than memorizing. If I understand a concept, it is easier for me to work through it. When I was in high school, I took my first computer class. I developed an instant attachment to computers at that point and decided to major in Computer Science, for which I earned a BS degree from the University of South Carolina. I began my career as a programmer at PMSC/CSC where I later moved over to management. I was there for 24 years followed by several years at Innovation Group/1insurer leading their Data Analytics Services Team. Several former colleagues approached me about opportunities at Duck Creek for which I applied and was able to come on board working on the Dovetail project. The rest is history.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗗𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂?
It means a lot that Duck Creek appreciates diversity and has made a conscious effort to recognize diversity among its employees. Stating one of Duck Creek's Core Values: We Listen - We are open to bold and different thinking, knowing that diversity and creativity move us forward as a business and a culture. Duck Creek's effort to promote diversity and representation allows us to celebrate and learn from one another. I have been blessed to come across so many great people over my career (and continue to do so at Duck Creek), however, I go back to my upbringing and the advice my now 87 year old father used to tell me as I started my career. I would come home from work, call him and complain about things that happened at work. He would tell me no matter where you go, there will be something. You just have to adjust and move on. He also told me to always do my best and keep a positive attitude. I share the same advice with my son. I also live by the golden rule "Do unto others…". Show the same respect to others that you want them to show to you (even though it may not always be reciprocated).

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲?
I’d like to share two things because they are interrelated. First off, we are among the most ethnically diverse communities ranging from indigenous to European, African to Asian ancestry. Due to this, most Latinos come from a multi-cultural heritage. Then, to call yourself Hispanic or Latina, you must feel the culture. These realities bring a unique richness to the community that permeates through our language, food, traditions, music, and so much more. As a result, we are highly adaptable people, we’re able to navigate through uncertainty well, and makes us curious about the world and experiences.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂?
Because it’s important to celebrate the contributions of Hispanic/Latinos to the USA and to the world, which many often go unrecognized or are taken for granted. Many Latinos are taught early on not to brag and work “heads down.” We don’t come from a culture of self-promotion, and this month it’s a source of inspiration to bring aspirations into action. This highly focused time pushes us and the people around us to reflect and feel empowered about how our community has impacted the world and what we have yet to achieve.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗸?
I got into the Tech Space mainly with the html customizations that could be done on MySpace pages. It really interested me that I could sort of do what I wanted by giving the computer instructions. I also am a fan of video games. My journey to Duck Creek was a bit different from most in that I did not join in the traditional way. I was a part of the deal that Duck Creek had with Dovetail. I joined the flock then, and it was one of the best things for my career.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗗𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂?
I feel that everyone is comfortable knowing that a company’s culture is tolerant of everyone no matter what your race/ethnicity, gender, etc. One of the things I always brag on Duck Creek about is the push for diversity that is taking place company-wide.

My advice would have to be to always be willing to learn, and you can learn from anyone. Especially being in the technology field things change all the time and if you aren’t learning new things, you can get left behind. Find rooms and groups where you are not the smartest person and learn everything you can and put that in your tool belt.
