One of the biggest misconceptions about liquor licensing is that all liquor licenses are basically the same.

They’re not.

Different liquor licenses carry different privileges. Some cover all-alcoholic beverages, while others may cover w**e and malt beverages, w**e, malt and cordials, or another combination depending on the license and jurisdiction.

Licenses can also be on-premise, for alcohol consumed at the establishment, or off-premise, for retail sales consumed elsewhere.

These classifications aren’t universal either. Each state has its own licensing structure, terminology, privileges, and requirements.

A license in one state may operate very differently from a seemingly similar license in another.

Understanding exactly what a license allows is an important first step when evaluating any liquor license opportunity.
