I've heard some version of this from business owners before:
“Business just feels slower lately.”
And this month, there's actually some data behind that feeling.
The newest QuickBooks Small Business Index shows small-business revenue dropped 1.52% in August. Revenue was down across every region of the country and in 9 out of the 12 industries they track.
Here's what matters more for an individual business owner:
The national numbers don't tell you what's happening in your business.
Maybe your revenue is down. Maybe sales are steady but expenses have crept up. Maybe you're doing the same amount of work but customers are taking longer to pay. Or maybe you're actually doing better than you think.
That's one of the reasons I think keeping up with your books matters so much. You don't have to guess whether business is slowing down. Your numbers should be able to tell you.
Business owners: compared with the beginning of the year, does business feel busier, slower, or about the same right now?
