VERNA LEIGH ROBERTS

Ms. Verna Leigh Roberts, age 66, of Bonifay, Florida passed away January 16, 2026, at her home. She was born November 7, 1959, in Chipley, Florida to the late John Ludlow Roberts and Evelyn Peachey Roberts. In addition to her parents, Verna was preceded in death by one sister, Bonnie Kay Roberts Powell.

Verna was a faithful member at Bonifay First United Methodist Church. There, she taught children’s Sunday School for many years and was actively involved in numerous children’s activities. She was also a proud and active member of the United Methodist Women, serving both at the local and district levels. Her love for children was also evident through her volunteering at Bonifay Elementary School, where she generously gave her time and energy to support students and staff.

A lifelong dog lover, Verna cherished the many dogs she had throughout her life, loving each one as if they were her own children. She also enjoyed traveling, especially on cruises shared with family and friends, creating treasured memories along the way.

Verna was a past member of the Bonifay Women’s Club and the Bonifay Pageant Committee, further demonstrating her dedication to community involvement. Professionally, she worked for many years at the Bonnie Kay Roberts Law Firm alongside her sister. Up until her passing, Verna remained active and hardworking, employed at Durant Insurance.

Verna Roberts will be remembered for her servant’s heart, her devotion to faith and family, and the lasting impact she made on her community.

Verna is survived by her two brothers, Bruce Roberts and Buddy Roberts and wife Nancy and one brother-in-law, Willard Powell.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Bonifay First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ryan Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the Caryville City Cemetery with Peel Funeral Home and Bonifay Crematory in charge of arrangements. 🚨 Bear Sighting Alert – Holmes Ave Area 🚨

Bonifay Police Department wants to inform residents that a black bear has been spotted in the area of Holmes Avenue. Biologists with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) have been notified and are actively working in the area.

While bear sightings in our city aren’t very common, your cooperation is essential in keeping both the community and the bear safe. 🐻

Here are a few things you can do to reduce bear attractants:
✅ Secure all household garbage and store bins in a secure location
✅ Bring in bird feeders or remove them completely for now
✅ Clean grills and outdoor cooking areas
✅ Don’t leave pet food or scraps outside
✅ Keep a safe distance – do not approach or feed the bear.

Let’s work together to minimize conflict and allow wildlife experts to do their job safely and effectively.

As always, call 911 for emergencies.

Stay alert, stay safe!
