🤖 Idaho is developing new K-12 standards for artificial intelligence — and educators are helping shape what comes next.

Four IEA members served on the committee that drafted Idaho’s proposed AI standards, bringing educators’ voices directly into conversations about how schools respond to rapidly changing technology.

“It’s people first, AI as a tool, and then how we use that tool ethically, safely, and effectively,” said IEA member and standards committee member Melyssa Ferro.

The standards are still moving through the approval process and educators will have more opportunities to weigh in.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of former Idaho Education Association President Terry Gilbert.

A longtime educator who remained highly engaged in Idaho’s education community, Terry was a fierce advocate for public education and Idaho students. We extend our deepest condolences to Terry’s family, friends and all who knew and worked alongside him.

📍 NEA President Princess Moss is coming to Idaho!

Shortly after taking office as president of the National Education Association on Sept. 1, Princess Moss will head west — including a stop in North Idaho next week. We’re excited to welcome her and give her a firsthand look at the opportunities and challenges facing Idaho’s public school educators.

As IEA President Peggy Hoy shared:

“I am thrilled President Moss is traveling here to better understand what’s happening on the ground, especially in some of our rural locals. ... President Moss will see that no matter what is happening in the Statehouse, our members will always work to improve their profession and help students succeed.”

A longtime music educator and union leader, Moss brings decades of experience organizing and advocating for public schools to her new role. We can’t wait to welcome her back to the Gem State!

Rest easy, Dolly. 💛📚

Today, we join millions around the world in mourning the loss of Dolly Parton — an extraordinary artist, philanthropist and lifelong champion for children and education.

Her impact can be felt right here in Idaho. Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, 11 programs across 19 Idaho counties put free books directly into the hands and homes of Idaho kids — part of a program that now reaches 1 in 6 children under age 5 across the United States.

In 2022, the National Education Association honored Dolly with the Friend of Education Award, NEA’s highest honor, recognizing her extraordinary commitment to childhood literacy and learning.

When she accepted the award, Dolly shared a message with educators:

“Together, let’s continue to inspire kids to dream more, care more, learn more and therefore, be more.”

Dolly understood the extraordinary power of putting a book in a child’s hands. Her legacy as a champion for education will live on in Idaho and around the world through the generations of children she inspired to read, learn and dream.
