Year-End Tax Tips to Save Before December 31

Before the year wraps up, take a few minutes to check in on your finances. A little year-end planning can help you keep more of what you’ve earned!

Here are a few things to think about:
• Max out your 401(k) or IRA contributions if you can.
• Make your charitable donations before December 31—whether cash, goods, or appreciated stock.
• Use any FSA funds that might expire soon.
• If you have investments, look for opportunities to offset gains with losses.
• Double-check your withholdings and estimated payments to avoid a surprise tax bill.
• Consider giving up to $18,000 per person (the annual gift tax exclusion) to family or loved ones.
• Business owners—review expenses and see if there are purchases or deductions you can make before year-end.

The end of the year is busy, but a few smart moves now can make tax season a lot easier. Talk with your CPA or financial professional to make sure you’re in great shape heading into the new year.

As we gather with family and friends this Thanksgiving, it’s easy to talk about food, football, and travel plans. But it’s also a wonderful opportunity to have meaningful conversations—the kind that build connection and understanding across generations.

Here are a few ideas to bring depth and gratitude to your table discussions:

1. Share Family Stories
Ask about favorite memories, how your grandparents met, or what life was like “back then.” These stories are part of your family’s legacy.

2. Talk About Lessons Learned
Invite each person to share one thing they learned this year that they’re grateful for, or something they would do differently.

3. Express Gratitude Out Loud
Go beyond “I’m thankful for family.” Be specific: Who made a difference in your life this year, and how?

4. Discuss Future Goals
Whether it’s a new hobby, a trip, or a professional goal, sharing what’s ahead helps families encourage and support one another.

5. Begin Thoughtful Planning Conversations
Holidays can be a natural time to talk gently about financial goals, healthcare wishes, or legacy planning. These discussions are an act of care and preparation.

This Thanksgiving, focus on connection, not perfection. The most meaningful moments come from conversations that make us laugh, reflect, and feel seen.

Wishing you a joyful and meaningful Thanksgiving filled with gratitude and good company.

Helping Kids Leave the Nest with Confidence

When our children go to college or move out on their own, it’s one of the proudest—and hardest—moments of parenting.

Beyond packing dorm essentials and favorite snacks, there are a few important things every parent should take care of before they leave:
• Make sure your child has signed a Health Care Power of Attorney and HIPAA form so you can help if there’s ever a medical emergency.
• Set up a Durable Power of Attorney so you can assist with financial matters if needed.
• Review health, car, and renters insurance coverage.
• Talk through budgeting, credit cards, and saving—these lessons are priceless.
• And most of all, talk about values, relationships, and safety. They still need your voice, even from afar.

Watching your child step into adulthood is bittersweet, but helping them prepare gives you both peace of mind.

Here’s to confident, capable kids—and parents who launch them with love and wisdom.
