In my time as a broker I have not seen a higher appetite for annuities than I have the last 12 months and even more so this week. With the markets where they are, it may be a good time to take chips off the table. However here’s some things to keep in mind:

If you’re in growth mode, caps and par rates are ripping. And now, depending on age, you may want to invest in a product with a “collar” surrounding it. Similar to that of a buffer fund that your FA may use, these growth products allow you to “gamble” 5-10-15% performance in order to get much higher caps and pars.

If you’re more of a fixed rate person, MYGA (multi year guaranteed annuities) are still holding strong for the time being for fixed rate investors. 2-5 year short term holds.

If you’re closer to retirement or you want a fixed rate “self funded” style pension, and income annuity might be the play. Bonuses, income payout factors, and roll up rates for income calculations have been through the roof since the end of 2023.

And finally, if you or a loved one, have current annuity contracts, it’s the time to shop. Saw contracts from the last 10 years this week that were underperforming or that had horrible income payouts compared to today.

They’re not for everyone, but for the conservative investor they are a hell of a tool to hedge the rule of 100.
