Mortgage rates improved last week after unemployment moved higher and inflation moved lower. Rates didnโt change much overall, but there was some improvement for the week, as inflation generally pressures rates higher and data showing inflation came in lower than expected helped rates move slightly lower.

Rates are not likely to move much between now and the end of the year, as traders generally take off the last couple of weeks of the year for the holidays. In fact, there will be no important economic data until January, when fresh jobs data from December is reported. This week is likely to see little or no movement in rates, nor will next week with the New Yearโs holiday.

- Christmas holiday: Markets close at 2pm ET on Wednesday and are closed all day Thursday. Friday resumes normal trading; however, volume is usually extremely low as traders remain home for the holidays.
- Economic data: Only Tuesday brings any economic data this week, and it is unlikely mortgage rates will react to the final Q3 GDP figures. It should be a calm week with little data.
