Had a chance to meet with a landscape contractor this week, still early in the conversation, and I’m not even sure yet if we’ll be able to work together.
But one thing stood out immediately.

His yard and garage setup.

Everything had a place. Equipment lined up. Tools organized. Water and ice on standby. Crews could walk in and know exactly where to go and what to grab.

Organization in the shop often translates to:
✔ Better crew efficiency
✔ Fewer delays in the field
✔ More consistency in their processes

It tells a story about how much pleasure someone takes in what they’ve built.
Regardless of where our conversation goes, I always appreciate seeing that level of detail and discipline.

250 years ago, this country didn’t start from certainty, it started with a risk.

Limited resources, long odds, and no guarantee it would work out. Just people willing to take a calculated risk on something they believed in.

Take a look back at the Revolutionary War timelines, it wasn’t some straight path to success. It was setbacks, regrouping, small wins, and a lot of sticking with it when things could’ve easily gone the other way.

George Washington simply said:
“Perseverance and spirit have done wonders in all ages.”

The idea of pushing forward without certainty of the outcome, making smart decisions instead of reckless ones, and staying in the fight longer than most people are willing to.

A mix of grit and calculated thinking is a big part of what built this country in the first place.

Happy 4th of July to all of the collective citizens of this great nation.

Insurance does not transfer all risk, nor does it eliminate all risks.

There are always...

- exclusions
- limits that don't match today's costs
- operational costs

Businesses that I work with don't only rely on insurance. They rely on a combination of strong internal controls, clear safety practices, and regular policy reviews.

This sets them up to identifying exposures before they turn into claims allowing them to implement processes and controls that prevent disruptions

leading to a safer, more predictable operation.

Insurance is merely backstop.

As peak season starts to wind down, it’s worth taking a step back to assess what went well, and especially what didn’t. The long days, tight schedules, and constant pressure tend to expose what’s not working. This makes it a great opportunity to stress test your safety practices.

The claims, delays, or close calls that showed up this summer aren’t random. They typically point to three key areas:

1. Where training broke down
2. When crews were stretched too thin
3. What processes didn’t hold up under pressure

Business owners should pay close attention to these signals and start pivoting toward new ideas and strategies to strengthen safety for the next season.

The improvements you make now won’t just impact operations, they’ll be reflected in your insurance program and, ultimately, your bottom line.

Some of the most costly claims don’t happen first thing in the morning, they happen at the end of the day.

After long hours, heat, and tight schedules, fatigue sets in. That’s when:

• backing accidents happen
• minor driving mistakes turn into auto claims
• strains, slips, and missteps lead to comp injuries

Often crews trying to squeeze in “one last job” or rushing to wrap up before heading home.

Fatigue affects judgment more than people realize. Slowing things down late in the day can prevent accidents that linger long after the job is done.

Do you see more close calls toward the end of busy days?

A lot of general liability claims come from equipment being used too close to people or property.

During peak season, crews are moving fast. Jobsites get tighter. Customers, pedestrians, parked vehicles, and finished work are often closer than expected.

That’s when things like:
• thrown debris
• unsecured tools
• equipment swinging a little too wide

turn into property damage or injury claims.

Most of these losses are about spacing, awareness, and slowing things down just enough.
A few extra minutes on setup and jobsite awareness can prevent a claim that lingers.

Let's keep out heads on a swivel this week.

A short‑lived heat wave… right into overcast and rain. 🤦
Not exactly ideal for residential or commercial service work.

With many crews getting rained out, this downtime can actually be useful, after catching up on admin work, estimates, and equipment maintenance.

One often‑overlooked opportunity?
Building or enhancing a safety plan.

Rain days are a good time to:
• review recent close calls or minor incidents
• walk through jobsite safety expectations
• refresh training on equipment and procedures
• make sure new hires understand the basics
• talk openly about what goes wrong during busy weeks

Strong safety cultures are built when there’s time to slow down and reset.

Utilize downtime to help prevent the next injury or claim.

With this weeks heat wave in the Northeast, any businesses working outside or on sites with high temps, keep this in mind.

Heat and long summer days play a significant role in workers’ comp claims.
It can lead to strains, slips, and overexertion injuries. This happens when crews are tired, dehydrated, or trying to push through the heat to stay on schedule.

Fatigue slows reaction time and leads to shortcuts, especially late in the day.

Managing pace, breaks, and hydration is the 🔑 to keeping crews healthy, and jobs moving during the toughest part of the season.

How are we helping crews handle heat this week?

Commercial auto claims rarely stem from highway accidents.

Auto losses happen at low speeds: backing into something, tight parking lots, jobsite congestion, or drivers trying to squeeze in one more stop at the end of a long day.

Add in longer hours, heat, fatigue, and more stops, those risks are amplified during the summer.🌋

Auto claims tend to be more expensive and disruptive than people expect. I'd call them a hassle.

Backing protocols and end‑of‑day discipline, can make a big difference during busy weeks.

Have you noticed more close calls once the schedule fills up?

05/04/2026

Peak season schedules are tight, and that pressure shows up in general liability claims.

Many summer GL losses come from rushed jobs: damaged vehicles, cracked hardscapes, hit irrigation/electrical lines, or nearby property getting caught in the rush to move on to the next stop.

Most of the time, it’s rarely attributed to bad work. It is good crews trying to do too much, at a rushed pace.

A few extra minutes on setup, spacing, and awareness can make the difference between finishing a job and filing a claim.

Have you seen rushed work create issues during busy weeks?
