Embedded payments are moving well beyond the simple “buy button.”

As more industries look to modernize complex payment workflows, banks and technology companies are investing in infrastructure that can support how money actually moves between multiple parties, systems and payment rails.

American Banker spoke with Payload CEO Ryan Rybolt about Fifth Third’s strategic investment in Payload, our growth in real estate, and the opportunity to bring modern embedded payments to industries like legal, property management, construction and franchising.

As Ryan shared, many of these industries face the same challenge: legacy technology and payment rails that weren’t built for the way businesses need to move money today.

Read American Banker’s coverage of the investment and the broader shift toward embedded payments:

The bank has invested in Payload, a company that has grown quickly selling new processing technology to real estate companies, with plans to expand into other industries with multiparty transactions.

Today marks a major milestone for Payload.

We're proud to announce a strategic investment led by Fifth Third, Payload's first significant outside capital since our founding.

Payload is now trending toward $6 billion in annual payment volume, powering money movement across real estate, legal, professional services and a growing ecosystem of software platforms.

This investment will help accelerate what comes next: expanding our engineering and go-to-market teams, advancing next-generation payment rail integrations, and bringing Payload to more businesses and software platforms across North America.

We built Payload around a simple conviction: business payments should live inside the software businesses already use. This milestone is validation of that vision and an opportunity to accelerate it.

A better payments integration starts with better documentation.

For software teams evaluating embedded payments infrastructure, the quality of the developer experience can make or break the decision. Clear API references, practical examples, and straightforward implementation guidance mean less time deciphering documentation and more time shipping.

We’ve heard that distinction directly in recent conversations with software companies evaluating Payload.

Our docs are built to make integration easier from the first API call through production.

Title companies still move payments by wire, whether it's collecting earnest money deposits or sending closing disbursements.

The reason comes down to one thing: wires are irrevocable. Once completed, they can't be reversed, disputed, or clawed back. For funds that have to be "good" before an escrow officer can release them, that finality has always outweighed convenience.

Standard ACH couldn't compete on that front. Neither could cards or consumer payment apps. None of them were built to clear the bar Good Funds laws set.

As of 2026, the requirements haven't changed, but the infrastructure has. RTP and FedNow settle immediately and irrevocably at the rail level. Multi-rail platforms are attaching compliance controls and transaction data directly to the payment instead of layering them on after the fact.

The result: less time spent confirming wires, chasing confirmations, and reconciling by hand. Same certainty escrow officers need, whether money's coming in or going out.

"Partnering with Payload has been a fantastic decision."

There's nothing more meaningful than hearing it directly from our customers.

We're proud to help law firms like Perigon Legal capture payments with a simple, secure payment link, while making legal invoicing faster and easier to manage.

Modern payments should remove work from your firm's day, not add to it.

What’s next for Payload in Canada?

As adoption continues to grow across the Canadian real estate industry, one thing has become clear: brokerages are noticing when payments become easier, faster, and more connected.

In this clip, Jack shares how Payload’s brokerage-to-brokerage momentum is expanding into the next phase: helping real estate software platforms embed modern payment capabilities directly into their own workflows.

From EFT and card processing to commission payouts and back-office payment automation, Payload gives platforms a faster path to payments without having to become a payment facilitator or manage the complexity of compliance on their own.

For Canadian real estate platforms, brokerages, and operators, the opportunity is simple: better payment infrastructure, built into the systems teams already use.

Most firms evaluate payment processors on pricing and payment methods.

Those matter, but they aren't what determines whether your IOLTA compliance holds up.

The real requirements sit elsewhere:

Where processing fees come from. How disputes get handled. Whether trust and operating funds route separately by default. Whether your records would survive an audit.

ABA Model Rule 1.15 and state bar guidance set the bar here, not a processor's feature list.

We put together a practical guide on what to verify before your firm goes live with a payment processor.
