How CDs and Bonds Pay You Interest Over Time

When you buy a CDs and bonds, you typically know the interest rate you're going to receive for the period you hold that investment. A one year CD paying 4% will pay that rate for the one year term, while a five year bond paying 4% can continue paying that rate over a five year period. Once the investment reaches maturity, you typically receive your original principal back. At that point, you'll need to decide where to reinvest that money, which means the interest rate available at that time can have an effect on the income you'll receive from that new investment.

How Capital Gains and Roth Conversions Can Work Together

A taxable brokerage account can be an important source of income in the early part of retirement, especially when you're trying to coordinate withdrawals with Roth conversions. Long term capital gains generally receive preferential tax treatment, while Roth conversions are taxed as ordinary income. That means you may be able to realize substantial capital gains and still use the lower ordinary income tax brackets for Roth conversions. For example, you could realize $200,000 in long term capital gains and still have room to do Roth conversions at different ordinary income tax rates.

What tax moves should you consider making before the end of the year? In this video, I walk through a year end tax planning process for retirees and show how to determine where you currently stand, which tax thresholds matter, and what strategies might make sense to make before the end of the year. We start by looking at how retirement income is actually taxed including IRA withdrawals, Social Security benefits, pensions, interest, dividends, and long term capital gains. I also walk through a retirement tax example to show how deductions, ordinary income, and preferential income stack together and why your effective tax rate can look very different from your marginal tax bracket. From there, we look at several important thresholds retirees should be watching, including the 12% Federal tax bracket, the Senior Bonus Deduction phaseout, ACA subsidy limits for early retirees, Medicare IRMAA thresholds, and the 22% and 24% tax brackets.

In this video, we cover:
β€’ How to estimate your total 2026 retirement income before year end
β€’ Why having a specific tax threshold target can be important
β€’ How the 12% tax bracket can fit into retirement tax planning
β€’ How the Senior Bonus Deduction can have an effect on your strategy
β€’ How long term capital gains can potentially qualify for the 0% tax rate
β€’ How Roth conversions and IRA withdrawals can fill unused tax brackets
β€’ Why future RMDs should be considered before deciding how much to convert
β€’ How ACA subsidy thresholds can matter for retirees before Medicare
β€’ How Medicare IRMAA can increase future Medicare premiums

Year end tax planning shouldn't only focus on minimizing this year's taxes. The bigger goal is understanding how today's decisions fit into your long term retirement withdrawal strategy, future required minimum distributions, Medicare costs, and the balance between your traditional, Roth, and non retirement accounts.

How Different Return Assumptions Can Skew Roth Conversions

Using different assumed rates of return for Roth and traditional retirement accounts can make a Roth conversion look better than it really is. If your software assumes an 8% return in the Roth account but only 6% in the traditional account, you're not just measuring the tax benefit of the conversion. You're also building in a higher investment return. Keeping the same assumed rate of return across each tax bucket helps isolate the actual tax benefit of doing the Roth conversion.

Why Your Income at 63 Can Raise Medicare Costs at 65

Medicare IRMAA is an income related monthly adjustment amount that can increase your Medicare premiums when your income exceeds certain thresholds. One important detail is that Medicare generally looks at your income from two years earlier. That means your income at age 63 can determine whether you'll have an IRMAA surcharge when you turn 65 and enroll in Medicare. As your income moves into higher IRMAA brackets, those additional Medicare costs can become significant. Understanding this lookback period is an important part of planning your retirement income and managing potential Medicare surcharges before they begin.

How Consistent Investing Can Build More Shares Over Time

When you're consistently investing during the accumulation phase, market declines can actually allow you to buy more shares at lower prices. When prices are higher, the same contribution buys fewer shares. When prices fall, it buys more. Over time, this process of investing consistently through different market environments is known as dollar cost averaging.

Why Sideways Markets Can Be Dangerous for Retirees

Recent market downturns have recovered relatively quickly, which can make it easy to assume that's what will always happen, but markets can also go through long sideways periods where it takes years to fully recover. If you're approaching retirement or already retired, those extended periods can be especially challenging when you're also taking withdrawals from your portfolio. How your investments are positioned and how you manage market risk can become an important part of protecting your retirement plan during those longer market cycles.

How Roth Conversions Can Help Reduce Future IRMAA Risk

IRMAA can become an important consideration when deciding whether to continue doing Roth conversions later in retirement. In 2026, the first IRMAA tier begins at $218,000 for married couples filing jointly and $109,000 for single filers. Reducing traditional retirement account balances through Roth conversions may help lower future required minimum distributions and potentially reduce the risk of higher Medicare premiums later.

How Much of Your Social Security Benefits Are Taxable?

Not all of your Social Security benefits are necessarily subject to federal income tax, but depending on your income, up to 85% of your benefits can be taxable. For example, if you and your spouse receive a combined $70,000 in Social Security benefits and you're at the maximum taxable level, $59,500 would be included in your taxable income. Understanding this calculation is an important part of estimating your retirement taxes and planning how much income you'll need from your other retirement accounts.

One of the biggest differences between your working years and retirement is how much more control you could have over your taxes. When you're working, most of your income comes from your job or business and there usually isn't much flexibility around when that income shows up. In retirement, your income might come from Social Security, pensions, traditional retirement accounts, Roth accounts, and taxable brokerage accounts, which gives you more opportunities to decide where your spending comes from and how much taxable income you recognize each year. In this video, I walk through three important tax targets that retirees should be thinking about every year: your ordinary income tax bracket, Medicare IRMAA thresholds, and the 0% long term capital gains bracket. I also use our retirement tax planning worksheets to show how these different thresholds can work together when you're deciding how much to withdraw from an IRA, how much to convert to Roth, and whether it makes sense to use money from a taxable brokerage account for living expenses. We walk through an example of a married couple with roughly $4 million in traditional retirement accounts who need about $240,000 per year for retirement spending. You'll see how using IRA withdrawals for living expenses can actually reduce the amount available for a Roth conversion, while using taxable brokerage assets might leave significantly more room inside the same ordinary income tax bracket.

In this video, we cover:
β€’ Why retirees should establish a tax target every year
β€’ How to target a specific ordinary income tax bracket
β€’ How future required minimum distributions can have an effect on today's Roth conversion decisions
β€’ Why Medicare IRMAA thresholds need to be included in your tax planning
β€’ How the 0% long term capital gains bracket fits into retirement withdrawals
β€’ How Social Security, interest, dividends, and other predictable income fill up your tax brackets
β€’ How to calculate the funding gap for your retirement living expenses
β€’ Why the account you use for living expenses could impact the amount you're able to convert to Roth
β€’ How taxable brokerage accounts could give you more flexibility with Roth conversions
β€’ How capital gains and the 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax fit into the calculation
β€’ Why reducing large traditional IRA balances before RMD age can help manage future taxes
β€’ How Roth accounts and taxable brokerage accounts are treated differently when they're inherited
