Medicare Changes Retirees Should Watch in 2026
GLP-1 medications have gained attention lately, especially for their potential in weight management. From my experience helping clients navigate health and retirement benefits, I’ve seen how coverage is anything but straightforward. In the US, most health plans will cover these drugs when prescribed for diabetes or related conditions. But for weight loss alone, it’s a different story—coverage is much less common. Requirements like prior authorization and minimum BMI thresholds are typical hurdles. Individual marketplace policies rarely cover GLP-1s for weight loss, while employer plans are more mixed: about 60% cover diabetes treatment, and roughly 35% include both diabetes and weight loss. For those on Medicare, standard coverage excludes weight-loss-only use, though there’s a pilot program offering select GLP-1s for $50/month. Medicaid and other state-federal programs each have their own rules, so it’s important to review your plan, be prepared to appeal if needed, and keep an eye on evolving guidelines. As with any financial decision impacting health and retirement, understanding the fine print can make a real difference.
