On August 31, 1901, Irish athletic competitions were taking place at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo.

The Pan-Am brought visitors, athletes and exhibits from around the world to Western New York, turning Buffalo into an international destination for the summer of 1901.

More than 125 years later, it is still one of the biggest events ever held in Buffalo.

On August 24, 1960, Buffalo’s Civic Stadium was officially rededicated as War Memorial Stadium.

That same night, the Buffalo Bills played the Oakland Raiders during the Bills’ first season.

The stadium, better known as “The Rockpile,” became an important part of Buffalo sports history and was home to the Bills through the 1972 season.

On August 21, 1871, the Rochester baseball club took on the Cliftons of Iowa on the House of Refuge grounds in Rochester.

The game was played decades before the modern professional baseball era, when organized baseball was still developing across the country.

Rochester lost 23 to 15, but it is a reminder that baseball has been part of the local sports scene for more than 150 years.

On August 14, 2003, one of the largest power outages in North American history hit the Northeast and parts of Canada.

Millions of people lost power, including much of Western New York. Traffic lights went dark, businesses shut down and people suddenly had to figure out what was going on without smartphones or social media telling them.

Grain elevators were a huge part of Buffalo’s growth and helped make the city one of the most important grain handling and shipping centers in the country.

It is easy to forget how much Buffalo’s location on the Great Lakes helped shape the city we know today.

On August 12, 1901, the League of American Wheelmen held its national convention in Buffalo.

Bicycling was booming at the time, and Buffalo had a strong cycling scene of its own. The convention took place during the same summer the city was hosting the Pan American Exposition.

The photo is from Buffalo’s cycling era and helps show just how popular bicycling had become around the turn of the century.

On August 11, 1956, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at the 50th anniversary gathering of Alpha Phi Alpha at the Statler Hotel in downtown Buffalo.

His address, titled “The Birth of a New Age,” came during the Montgomery Bus Boycott and several years before the March on Washington.

A pretty incredible piece of Buffalo history.

This Day in Western New York History

On August 10, 1669, French explorer René-Robert Cavelier de La Salle and his group reached Irondequoit Bay, near what is now Rochester.

The area was already an important part of Seneca territory and a well traveled route long before Europeans arrived. La Salle’s visit became one of the earliest recorded European references to the Rochester and Genesee region.

More than 350 years later, Irondequoit Bay is still one of the best known waterways in the Rochester area.
