Why do scams look so different depending on who they reach?​

The FBI's 2025 numbers show the split clearly. People in their twenties filed 112,069 complaints and reported $563.1 million in losses. People 60 and older filed 201,266 complaints and reported $7.748 billion.​

It comes down to which scams find which people: younger adults mostly encounter fast, high-volume schemes: an item paid for that never ships, a job offer that turns out to be fake. Older adults are more often targeted by investment and tech support scams, which build trust over weeks before any money moves.
The average reported loss in that group reached $38,500.​

Neither age group is more careless than the other. They are simply being approached differently.​

During the holiday season, this is a good conversation to have across the whole family, because the warning signs are not the same for everyone.​

Has anyone ever asked you to pay with cryptocurrency? How about with gift cards?

In 2025, Minnesotans filed 13,595 complaints with the FBI and reported $248.9 million in losses. About $152 million of that involved crypto.​

There is a reason scammers favor it. Cryptocurrency moves like cash. Once you send it, there is no bank to call and no transaction to reverse. Gift cards and wire transfers work the same way, which is why those requests show up again and again. So when someone asks you to pay that way, especially in a hurry, that is your signal to stop. Anyone legitimate will wait while you check.​
